Once there was a school in close proximity to the Diyawanna council which had been named after Shri Rahula Thera, the celebrated Buddhist monk, who was an erudite scholar and an author of several classic poetry works.
Under some unfortunate circumstances, this school remained closed for a long time. The Western provincial council whose term is about to expire in a few days suddenly took an interest in this closed school and took action to re-open it the other day.
People in the area were very happy that this school named after an illustrious scholar Bhikkhu was re-opened and attended in large numbers the opening ceremony held.
However, people were dumb-struck when the commemorative plaque was unveiled to find the school renamed after the provincial chief in place of the name they all had revered – Sri Rahula Maha Vidyalaya!
Those who witnessed the name change in the plaque greeted its unveiling with stony silence, they say.
