Can any political party boast of a programme?

Mr.Gayantha Karunathilleke the UNP’s Media Spokesman accuses the Government of not having a programme to develop the country. True that the Government has proved its failure beyond reasonable doubt that they are a band of blinds who are touching in the dark to hoodwink the people, with no mercy at all for the people who voted them in.

They are only concerned with what they can make out of the investment. Statistics that speak of economic growth of 8% are very unrealistic as no project is preceded by a rational cost benefit analysis. For example the rehabilitated coastal railway which indebted the nation to a tune of over US$ 400 million is an utter wastage as no benefit at all is accrued to the people. But it is shown in the growth statistics as an investment. Even a novice to economics know that if there is development as claimed by the government it should trickle down to the people at large raising their standard of living. Instead what has happened is the further widening of the gap between the rich and the poor . They are white elephants that often break in and destroy lives of the poor.
The Marxist parties since their beginnings were not interested in gaining power. They canvassed for people’s support to propagate a political philosophy. They promised the sun and the moon to deceive the people during their heydays and finally when they became interested in tasting power they had no alternative to hanging to the ‘sari pota’ following which they were used by the capitalists to betray the very class they pretended to serve.

Isn’t the opposition responsible for the sorry and deceiving role played by the government? If the opposition can present a programme to educate people on denial of freedoms and human rights, shanty dwellers and practical ways to alleviate their sufferings, the government will have to be awaken to the occasion as people are not rallying round empty patriotism but real life situations. Instead what does the opposition do? Is there an y political party that is ready to put their detail program before the people , discuss it and get their approval for it before going for an election.?

Is there any political party that possess a convinced programme of work to alleviate the ills of the country. Answer is a big “no”. An opposition that utters something to pass the day cannot come to power. Every politician in the country speaks in the language the fox addressed the crow with the sole intention of grabbing the soap of cheese, and not with the intension of seriously developing the country and enhancing the welfare of the people. If the UNP is a serious political organization it can win the voters even tomorrow and come to power.

Everyone is asking for power without telling in detail what it would do if it comes to power. A very good example is the shanties in the city.

The UNP is critical of the handling of the national question. Has it conducted any public discussion on this issue with the public before proposing to devolve power to the North and the East? It is certain that if a referendum is held on this issue, the people will reject the Provincial Council system in toto.

Every political party in the country is led by cunning individuals with no programme to develop the country. It is political hypocrisy in the highest form.
