Our country is politically bankrupt; poised on the brink of presidential election but who should the people vote for? A million dollar question that has no answer! This horrendous business of family-owned politics should be done away with; where kith and kin are appointed to key positions and legitimate appointees overlooked. You young ones are the new genre politicians of this era; so stand up, not just for yourselves but for your country – your country needs you, she desperately needs you!
The majority Sri Lankans feel our Prime Minister is a loser – most of them fought hard to give him a second chance but he does not seem to have learnt a lesson, it is almost as though he is content to plod along with no initiatives, no get up and go attitude and continues to point a finger at others. After all, it was he who originally appointed Ravi, Finance Minister; it was he who brought in Arjun Mahendran, so does that not make him an accomplice? Was he not then aware of who and what they were? People are disillusioned, dissatisfied with what is going on; they expected more from you but you seem to be either unaware of their expectations or immune to them – which is it Mr. Prime Minister?
The country would benefit immensely if Sajith studied and contributed to the development of youth and made resources available for them to do so. He should also inculcate in them the necessity to develop leadership, facilitate discussions on social justice and common human values
Who do the people turn to now, whom do they vote for, whom do we place our unqualified trust in with our precious vote? This time you have given the country Sajith.Our country desperately needs new blood, new ideas, new people to lead them, to help them and the country in a forward thrust towards new horizons wisely. Most of the politicians today cannot relate to the needs of the people because they cannot and do not find time for the people! Ninety percent of their time is spent on trying to garner publicity; bigger and wider the publicity they get, the happier they are! They don’t seem capable of focusing on the needs of the people; unless they are splashed in the headlines: WE NEED A PRESIDENT WITH THE QUALITIES OF TRUE LEADERSHIP! WE HAVE POLITICIANS WHO ARE A DIME A DOZEN, WITH NOTHING UPSTAIRS – THEY CAN’T CLAIM LEADERSHIP QUALITIES. WE NEED A LEADER WHO CAN UNDERSTAND AND RELATE TO THE REAL ISSUES FACED BY THE PEOPLE IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES. TO PROPEL THE COUNTRY ON A FORWARD MARCH WITH A CRYSTAL CLEAR AWARENESS OF ITS BASIC URGENT PRIORITIES AND NECESSITIES!
Currently, Sajith functions and speaks clearly, he seems to have his own agenda and only the future will tell if he will bow to pressure. He implies quite confident and lucid that he will not adhere to any condition. The housing needs of the poor man are uppermost in his mind and that has been clearly demonstrated by the number of ‘GAMAS’ (villages) he has had constructed up-to-date. There seem to be quite a few presidential hopefuls, but whether they know what is actually expected of them or not is yet to be seen. The country would benefit immensely if Sajith studied and contributed to the development of youth and made resources available for them to do so. He should also inculcate in them the necessity to develop leadership, facilitate discussions on social justice and common human values. He should stress that all religious teachings, particularly the tenets of Buddhism, be adhered to strictly and conservatively. That, the youth in particular, should learn to be truly heartwarming, caring people, always mindful of others, especially those in their motherland.

The skyline of Colombo and even some of the other urban areas are so congested with high-rise buildings with no respect for the environment or the ground they stand on. Whether the ground can withstand the propinquity of weight is of no concern. SO WHAT OF THE POOR? Well, as we said before, they just have to make do with their humble thatched huts or, if they are lucky, get housing in one of the various GAMAS being built by Sajith. ONE CONCERNED

When will our politicians ever realise that in all the years of this government, they have done nothing to merit the confidence of the people, they have taken no measures to relate to the burdens we are facing, only heaped more on us! Sajith is going to be faced with insurmountable problems; housing, transport, traffic congestion and more importantly a nation strangled with debt, both governmental and personal, to name just a few!
It is indeed a right-thinking Prime Minister who endorsed Sajith as the UNP’s presidential candidate and very rightly asked that a ‘decent campaign’ be conducted
The plight of the disabled war heroes cannot and must not be overlooked! Do they really have to come out and protest to be heard? To begin with, they should not even have had to ask for what they are ‘demanding’ now, some measure of compensation should have been made available to them; they put their lives on the line for our country, so why should they have to ask or even protest, they should be protected! Like his father, Sajith is capable of going down to the essential grassroots level, meeting with the common people, which is vitally important from a central political angle! It is indeed a right-thinking Prime Minister who endorsed Sajith as the UNP’s presidential candidate and very rightly asked that a ‘decent campaign’ be conducted. Like the gentleman he is, the Prime Minister has appealed to the senior UNPers to conduct the campaign in a decent and disciplined manner. You may not have lived up to the political aspirations of the people Mr. Prime Minister, but you certainly did the country right this time around!
