Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) - affiliated teachers’ union yesterday took majority control of Education Employees Co-operative Thrift & Credit Society Limited which is commonly called ‘Gurugedara’, defeating the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) – affiliated Ceylon Teachers Services Union which dominated for a considerable period of time. Gurugedara is the largest Education Co-operative Society that gives lending facilities for teachers in South Asia. It has over 200,000 members, and a cash flow of Rs.1.2 billion.
In the selection of its 15 member board of directors, the SLPP’s teachers union managed to clinch up all the six key positions. In the selection of provincial director’s, the SLPP got directors for three provinces and the JVP got six provinces including the north and the east.
