At least 7,030 people from 1,681 families have been affected in several districts due to the adverse weather conditions prevailing around the country, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.
People were affected due to the occurrences like high wind, lightning, floods, falling of trees and rocks, which resulted following the torrential rains experienced in Kandy, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Colombo, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Hambantota, Badulla and Jaffna.
The water levels of the rivers, which were on alert, have now come to normal conditions except at the Putupaula station of the Kalu Ganga.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology said that the showery condition over the island, particularly in south-western part was expected to continue further.
“Showers or thunder showers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces and in Jaffna and Mannar districts,” it said.
“Several spells of light showers can be expected in the Anuradhapura district,” it added.
He said fairly heavy falls above 75 mm were likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Western provinces.
“Showers or thunder showers will occur at several places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m,” it forecast.
The Department requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages which could be caused by temporarily localized strong
winds and lightning.
