A large crowd thronged Matara Hospital recently after hearing the shocking news of a man who had given birth to a baby boy. The man sporting a beard had been from a village bordering Matara.

After being admitted to the patient registration unit, the doctor who examined him initially had referred the patient to a male ward as he suffered birth pangs. Later, he had been transferred to the maternity ward by another doctor who was excited to examine the pregnant male. He had been provided with bed jackets and chintzes. The patient was then transferred to the labour room where he delivered a baby boy. Arrangements were later made by the hospital staff to breastfeed the newborn.

Commenting on this, a spokesman for the hospital said the NIC of the patient concerned indicated a male identity and that his travelling bag was full of men’s wear. He added that the patient was a trishaw driver. (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk and Tharanga Gunaratne)

My faith in human decency gets restored with your comment. Unfortunately as a country we have a long way more to go.

havent doctors in this country heard of intersexed people? An anatomically intersex human who has a functioning menstruating womb but external sexual organs which are on the male side of ambiguous in form. There is nothing strange about this.

Please not Western "Transgenderism". What we have here is a woman who underwent gender transformation through surgery but retained the womb. She must have been already pregnant when she started taking the male hormones
