President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to the officials to expedite the Wew Gam Pubuduwa programme implemented with the aim of reconstructing 325 rural dilapidated tanks in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Vavuniya and Mannar districts of the North Central, North and North Western Provinces.
In parallel to this event, a project will be implemented to provide clean drinking water facility for the people living in villages connected to those tanks and the President also supervised the progress of those activities.
President Sirisena gave these instructions during a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat, yesterday to look into the present progress of the joint Water Management project implemented by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment.
The International Green Climate Fund has provided Rs.6664 million for this project and the necessary technical assistance required for the project will be provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Through this project nearly 15 lakh underprivileged farmer families who are vulnerable to natural disasters like floods and drought will be benefited.
The Government of Sri Lanka will invest Rs. 2450 million for this project and it is expected to complete in 2024.
