The funds amounting to over Rs.550 million deposited by customers of the Gampaha SANASA bank had been defrauded by the Chairman of the Bank who was taken into custody yesterday by the CID, Police Spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekera said.
The suspect who was taken into custody by the special unit 11 of the CID has been identified as Nanayakkara Jayasuriya Appuhamilage Lalitha Jayasuriya, a resident of Medagampitiya in Divulapitiya.
These funds totalling Rs.558,584,133 deposited by over 128 customers had been misused by the suspect as detected during the investigations.
The customers had made these deposits at the SANASA Bank Gampaha from 2002 up to now.
The Police Spokesperson said further that the suspect had been taken into custody yesterday at his office and to be produced at Gampaha court today.
