Laws pertaining to archaeology are to be changed in order to save those who destroyed the assembly hall of King Buvanekabahu, UNP Deputy General Secretary Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

Speaking at an election rally in Ja-ela Mr. Wijewardene said everyone should be equal before the law whilst it should not be manipulated.

“The ruling party had said the law pertaining to archaeology should be changed. It is going to be changed in order to save those who destroyed the assembly hall of King Buvanekabahu in Kurunegala,” Mr. Wijewardene said.

“Laws are not enforced on politicians while it is only enforced on ordinary people. There was one candidate going on a motorcycle parade without wearing a helmet but police had failed to take action against him,” he added. The former State Minister said the divisions among the ruling party had come out now as candidates of that party have already started criticising their own candidates.

“A female candidate from SLPP had said that there are donkeys contesting from her party. Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa had openly said that it must have been a donkey who gave this candidate the ticket to contest the election” he also said.

He said UNP will be safeguarded despite the divisions. “Late Prime Minister S. W. R. D Bandaranaike left the UNP and formed SLFP while Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake formed the DUNF later. However UNP remained despite these defections. It will be the same this time as well,” he said.
