Malinga abandons his SL team

2014-07-29 08:48:05

Sri Lankan star Lasith Malinga has confirmed that he would represent his Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai Indians at the forthcoming Champions League T20 tournament.

Malinga's local team Southern Express team manager Shane Fernando said that Malinga had indicated his decision to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Chief Executive Ashley de Silva yesterday, the last day of the deadline given to Sri Lanka T20 captain to decalre his decision.

Malinga captained the Southern Express to the championship title at the domestic Super Fours T20 tournament to get his team a qualifying position at the CLT20 tournament.

According to tournament rules, players have the right to choose which team they play for in the CLT20.

Interestingly, Southern Express are due to meet Mumbai Indians in their second qualifying round match of the tournament.

Malinga's decision to abandon his local team and choose Mumbai Indians will earn him more than Rs. 24 million from his IPL team.

Give him one day captaincy too, he deserves that for the commitment he is showing for Sri Lanka cricket.

Playing in the Champions Trophy is not about playing for the country but for franchises. So Malinga selected the most lucrative franchise. Big deal? DM should focus on more pressing problems in the country and bring them out in the open rather than using sensationalist/misleading headlines to tarnish sports people's names.

Money matters a lot for him. Not as genuine cricketers like Arjuna, Roshan, Mahela and Aravinda

Well i think its a choice left to Malinga, which is a personal choice,, i do admire his boldness and straight forwardness anyone in his shoe would do,, if he or she had the right mind..

I am not a big fan of Malinga..but in this case he has taken the correct decision.....there is no future for provincial base cricket. It will never be a force....we all know club cricket is the only force in SL may dump millions as usual for Provincial Cricket...but the result will be the same..

This is a choice between two franchise that he should select and he has chosen the one that will yield more income. There is nothing wrong in that. I also remind everyone that Malinga played for Sri Lanka during the IPL foresaking a lucrative deal.
