Mervyn thanks Chief Priest

E-mail Print
Minister Mervyn Silva thanked the Chief Priest of the Munneswaram Kovil for heeding the President’s request, the Minister's outgoing media secretary Rehan Wijeyrathne said quoting Minister Silva.

“The minister takes this opportunity to thank the Chief Priest for heeding the request of the President. He also thanks the President for his timely intervention on the issue which proved that he was indeed the custodian of all religions in the country,” Wijeyrathne said. ( By Hafeel Farisz)

Why doesn't he want to stop fishing? Isn't fish considered as a living creature in the religion? This govt even has a ministry to promote fishing. How come?

well said Kamal.....I want to ask a question from the people who are saying slaughters of animal should be stopped...."Isn't fishing is a slaughter" isn't eating fish is equal to eating beef? How many small fishes you have to kill to feed a village?
How many goats/cows you have to kill to feed a village?
Compare the difference of slaughtering you have to do???

Its also opposing a primitive practice and saving a few lives. People cannot do just any barbaric thing and claim religious freedom. Understand that.

I have one point....this Munneswaram Kovil goat slaughtering in is horrible and harsh; where they kill the goat on a chopping style with a heavy metal knife...But, Islam totally prohibits this way of slaughtering..Islam has shown the right way to slaughter an animal minimizing the pain through a very quick slaughter...Study Islam then people whoever has misconceptions will understand.

Why? According to Buddhism, there should be tolerance to others. If you don't like it, keep away. Don't impose your "values".

Commenting on religious activities are so sensitive. Mejority should respect the minority and allow them to do thier religuis activities. if this is the case then you cant slaugter Paultry, Pigs etc. those are also animails it also got the same pain while slaughtring. Mr. Mervyn is not an vegeterian he use to eat all kind of meats. Haj is an holy activity for muslims and entire world do slaughtering animails. Instead of involving in minority religiuos activities there so so many development process needed for sri lanka, please talk about it. we are sick an tired of this attitude.

The winner is the priest at the kovil- his presence of mind may have averted a major religious conflict which our ministerial worthies saw fit to ignore as usual.

I am with the Minister. Being a Hindu, I was really saddened about this slaughter. Hinduism never allowed animal cruelty. Even the Hindu congress, the so called guardians of Hinduism, did not request the priest to stop but requested other religious faiths to respect our rights to slaughter. If this is thier view then we do not need any Hindu congress. This priest seems to be with a motive of filling his wallet. I will pray that this practice of slaughtering animals in public is banned by the government and this is the only way for it.

There will be a day where the cattle population will exceed the human population in Sri Lanka. Our politicians are more concerned about cattle slaughter than human slaughter in the country. This is probably coz they fall into the same breed. Mervyn is definitely trying to be the bull of the group. Way to go Mr. President and your supporters with communal minds.
