69 persons intercepted

Sri Lanka Navy intercepted 69 persons illegally bound for Australia in a multi-day trawler today, the navy said.

The trawler named “Asha Duwa” was intercepted by a Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Western Naval Command in the seas off Negombo.

Among the arrested persons are 48 Tamils, 19 Sinhalese and 02 Muslims. They are residents of Negombo, Pulmude, Vavuniya, Mannar, Jaffna, Wishvamadu and Batticaloa. They were escorted to Modera Fisheries Harbour to be handed over to the CID for further investigations.

instead of nabbing these guys.. the government should implement employment opportunity schemes either locally or through the foreign employment bureau for all categories.. these guys want to leave their mother country for a reason... better future.. something they seem to believe doesnt exist in SL...

Bright idea. If Sri Lankan air lines have direct flights to Australia , May be these guys will opt to fly direct than take a boat .

If the Australian Govt is willing to accept them as refugees who are going there in this dangerous mode, why not SL govt: just let them go. May be by amending the emigration laws.
