India beat SL by six wickets

E-mail Print
India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the fourth one-day international at R. Premadasa Stadium to lead 3-1 in the five-match series.

Manoj Tiwary assumed the role of the main strike bowler for India, taking a career-best four wickets to help restrict Sri Lanka to a competitive 251 for eight in the fourth one-day international.

Tiwary, who was called up to the side for his batting, took the prized wickets of Dinesh Chandimal (28), Anjelo Mathews (14), Jeewan Mendis (17) and Thisara Perera 2 to finish with figures of 4-61.

Opener Upul Tharanga scored the only half-century for Sri Lanka, which batted first after winning the toss. He laid a solid foundation, sharing 91 runs for the opening wicket with Tillakaratne Dilshan (42) but Sri Lanka's middle and lower order failed to capitalize on the strong start.

Dilshan miscued a pull shot against seam bowler Ashok Dinda trying to increase the scoring rate during a batting power play and India captain and wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni held a well-judged catch. Dilshan faced 48 deliveries and hit seven boundaries.

Tharanga was stumped off spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin. He faced 73 balls, hit a six and four boundaries. Lahiru Thirimanne, taking the No. 3 spot of injured prolific batsman Kumar Sangakkara, was dropped on 16 but was solid during the rest of his innings, scoring 47 runs without a boundary.

Sri Lanka lost four wickets for 29 runs toward the latter stages of its innings but 32 runs off 18 balls from the ninth-wicket pair of Rangana Herath and Lasith Malinga gave the home side hope of competing against a deep Indian batting lineup.

India bolstered its batting by calling up Tiwary after dropping specialist legspin bowler Rahul Sharma. Sri Lanka called in Thirimanne for Sangakkara who picked up a finger injury during the third match. Seam bowler Isuru Udana was dropped and was replaced by Nuwan Pradeep.

Scorers: India 255-4 (Virat Kohli 128 not out, Suresh Raina 58 not out; Anjelo Mathews 1-18) def. Sri Lanka 251-8 (Upul Tharanga 51, Lahiru Thirimanne 47; Manoj Tiwary 4-61, Ravichandran Ashwin 2-46). (Source: 3news)

SL did their best , they were on the way to 300+ but threw their wkts by Dilshan and Upul Tharanga. Mahela dis some changes to power- play overs, but that was not enough. India was great they used their brains. True world champions.

what's happening to our Cricket team. this is not acceptable - the SL cricket board and selectors and schools have to start planning for our future generation of Stars who will play and win with pride for the country.

Lankans have never been good at setting scores, especially now with our depleted bowling attack. The only one who recognized this and played to our strength is Arjuna. Even at the '96 WC final in spite of everyone advising him to bat first he did what he thought was right and created history.

It was inevitable but the Sri Lankans should look at the bright side-they could learn how to be resilient from a side that breathes it!

India is facing the weakest SLan bowling attack ever, at the moment due to the ignorance of J&pups who have always preferred henchmen to proven young talents. The 1st Cla Bowling Ave of (the main Bowlers in the squad.) Malinga, Mathews, Thisara, Pradeep, Jeewan, Dilshan, Herath& Senananayake are read as; 30.39, 45.43, 41.09, 38.84, 27.76, 35.13, 25.03 &20.50 respectively. A big idiot only will exclude a proven tall spinner; the class of S’ayake at a time their henchman has given away 208 runs to take 3 wickets in his last 6 ODIs. Interestingly the main spinner that the J,pups & the local media have too much faith on, can’t spin the ball unless he gets a 5th day pitch. How could one can depend on a such bowler, with only one straight bowl as a weapon ?and his fielding too gives immense pain to the eyes of ardent Cricket fans,as he moves around the field like a wounded soldier. By the way there isn’t a single other bowler in the team to support Manlinga.

knowing india has a strong batting line up i dont get y mahela batted first.... over the last yr one of the biggest down fall for our bats man has been too many of them repeatedly trying the reverse sweep..... and our fielding is self explanatory

I don't know what is wrong with the Sri Lankan team; India is an average team to beat. It seems like our players only perform when it comes to IPL. These people should be banned from playing IPL. If you compare, Pakistan team is a better team than India in all departments. If we managed to beat them why they couldn’t do the same to India. It’s all because our players are so scared to upset Indians as IPL is there priority not Sri Lanka.

@Yo, The bi lateral series was an opportunity for SL players to showcase their talent and get picked up in the IPL auction. Why would they play like sissies and spoil their image? At this rate none of the guys are going to get selected for the next IPL.

The comment seems to be suggesting that SL cricketers are not patriotic!! I do not understand when we will stop commenting about other cricketing nations and keep on ignoring our team's failures. Whether Pakistan is a better team than India or the other way round, the fact remains that SLs have lost last three series against India at their home soil irrespective of their losses and SL's wins against their respective opponents.

Nothing to talk about SL team now, I stopped watching matches now. Remember earlier, if Jayasuriya scorred 50 match will win. So we're lacking of like Jayasuriya, Murali & Vasi. Still we cannot forget Jayasuriya though there are alot of controversies.

We are very slow at the start of the innnings. We need to find a very aggressive batsman to open. One that comes to my mind is Dilshan Munaweera. He's still young , give him the opportunity. You guys can check his profile in cricinfo.

Bad decisions by a poor captain (Mahela) caused the damage. Malinga can only bowl well @ IPL, what is the logic? Mahela - you are responsible for giving away the series to Indians.

Really it was our game yesterday, if-not our sloggy bowlers bowling effectlessly. Why our captain did-not allow Malinga to bowl between over No. 20-25 when the opponents were chipping up the score. Anyway poor performance of our guys and all the credit should go to the Indians.

For sure, our players must learn from Indians. Ofcourse, the bowling department is poor of the indian team, but see how brilliently they batted. Sanga should be our captain and the old blocks should retire and pave way to the young - B team players to come in.

Sri Lanka looked a jaded team. Batting has not been consistent and the catching and throw-ins have been atrocious. Bowling resources should be somehow strengthened.

won the toss and elected to bat first? this decision is wrong, normally Sri Lankan is best in chasing also during night wet ground and many chances for missign catches, this was happand in both matches. We can not say Sri lankan team is weak, but decision was wrong

Yes, that's is during Arjuna. Even when during Jayasuriya both was capable. But now no speciallity. To win opposition should be got out less than 150 or we should score more than 320. Otherwise just a dream.

Too many extra curricular activities distracting from them playing the game. If they have other interests, which are more important - select players will will die for the country, game and team. Cricket may be a professional sport now - but the passion is seriously lacking in our senior players. Time for Change. Learn from the indian team who dropped big names for youth. we have too many names with no performances. (not to mention the politics behind the sport - but even the BCCI has politics, but the players still perform - so thats no excuse!)

Face it guys - no point of blaming A B or C, the indian batting line up is too strong IN THESE CONDITIONS for us. Having said that, disapointed with the pitches SLC dish out. Hambantota 2nd ODI was a wicket with some assitance for the bowlers and same can be said about the Pallekele deck for the PAk test. With a WC in Australia coming up, why on earth are SLC making dumb batting wickets that Indians thrive on ?

Mahela's gamble failed miserably, his adventurous scoop very early in the innings is even worst.
A very irresponsible act particularly when Sanga is not in the team due to injury.
Poor SL crowd that numbered the best, should be very disappointed with the outcome.
