Water bills to go up

E-mail Print
National Water Resources and Drainage Board Chairman Karunasena Hettiarachchi said that the water rates would be increased soon.

The board had not increased the rates for three years, but it would be compelled to increase them due to the higher cost of electricity, fluctuations of the rupee and other costs, said Mr. Hettiarachchi, speaking to “Lankadipa” (Jayantha Samarakoon)

I heard people in Hemmathagam, (Mawanella Electorate). Used to get bills only for rental as there is no supply of water due lower pressure in water supply.

Stop water wastage and improve your service without giving an extra burden to the general public who are trying to meet both end these days due to soaring cost of living in the country.

How does "fluctuations of the rupee" affect water supply? I didn't know that we import water too. The board had not increased the rates for three years ? What kind of fuzzy logic is that?

Not increased for three years?

This should go into Guinness book.

Why not hold on for another year and make a bigger record?

Yes, well said, no one cares for any increases, it does-not mean the down fall will never strike the Govt. How long they could cheat the people.

Not a bad decision as far as the utility bill alone match the salary of an average earning man he can starve to death... All are arbitrary decision not a policy decision considering the repel effect.

Well said. If we reserve all our earnings to pay the utility bills, how to eat? how to euducate our children? if the Govt. has fallen into debts, why then get more and more loans showing bogus developments.

Very good, this must be done during drought and then reduced when ample rain, you should see how people waste water especially in col 10-15. they use it as if its god send with no regard for a fast depleting natural resource. the same goes for the suburb people who feel urban water comes off a water fall. same goes for electricity, no regard for it, still uses 60/75W normal bulbs. simply because bed/living/dining all in the same room. our people will only learn from two things, stomach and wallet. The only place to hit. dont even think about brains, we aint have em, dem only in certificates.

Close road-side taps and collect monies due from the govt institutions, ministers houses etc instead of penalizing those who pay their bills regularly making them pay for your inefficiencies.

It appears that the high costs are affecting only these institutions and keep on increasing their cost of services but as if does not affect us our salaries and pensions remain the same. Blackmailers, all of them!

Hay Govt. don't tax the poor masses too much. Some families eat only once and for the balance two meals they only drink water. Its a curse for our country to beat the poor mans tommy, mind it.

There is water leaking from underground pipes at Ward Place, Borella Cross Road and Borella Junction, and I'm sure there are more across the country. Why don't you fix those first?
