Watcher stuck by remote controlled gate

A watcher of a house at Bulugahagoda in Ganemulla was found dead at the gate of the house. Ganemulla Police conducting inquiries into the incident said the victim Kanthan Ganeshan (50) had his neck accidentally stuck in the remote controlled gate.

Gampaha Chief Magistrate Kema Swarnadhipathi who visited the scene and held the preliminary magisterial inquiry ordered police to conduct further inquiries. (Pix and Tex by Ajith Madurapperuma)

Good thing for the house owner that contraptions such as this are hardly regulated in Sri Lanka. I would imagine there are countries which would hold the owner if not the manufacturer accountable for not installing fail-safe mechanisms...

tragic. Sadly there are no laws in Sri Lanka to prosecute the owner of the house for criminal negligence. Life has become so cheap in SL.

There are safety features and safety sensors both sides. if some body or a vehicle blocks the receiving sensor when the gate closes it should go back to the opening position.
Few professional installers does it as specified.
Others just ignores because of negligence, some due to cost saving. If some thing bad happens cost is very high.

He is the watcher of the same house. He should have a good idea about how the gate is operating. Therefore this accident has to a well planned accident. Something fishy...

With this type of gates you can install a sensor which is ver chep, that is for the gate to stop moving immediately once the sensor detects anything in its way.That shoud be made compulsory.

By law, in all western countries any electronic devise such as automatic gates, garage doors etc have a built in mechanism that stops the forward action as soon as any object gets in the way, it goes backwards. This stops any child or pet getting injured. The pressure necessary is negligible to stop the forward action. Its time similar safety mechanisms are made mandatory in Sri Lanka to avoid tragedies such as this one.

The sliding gate is a real killer two years back a 6 year old died.
These gates should be banned if it does not have a certified sensor system.
