Lanka rejects UK Diaspora poll

E-mailPrint

By Amira Cader

The Sri Lankan government rejected a referendum conducted by the British Tamil Diaspora over the weekend endorsing the principle of Tamil Eelam. Speaking to Daily Mirror online Government Defense spokesperson Minister Kehiliya Rambukwella said Sri Lanka is not concerned of any referendum conducted by any community or country.

“We are a democratic country and follow all process of elections and political solutions wanted by the people of Sri Lanka,” he further said.
This was after British Tamil Diaspora conducted a poll over the weekend endorsing the principle of Tamil Eelam last week.

The poll showed over 64,000 British Tamils saying “yes” to Tamil Eelam. The poll took place in sixty five booths across London and in major towns and cites throughout Europe.

The British mandate will follow similar polls across Europe and Canada; it is a part of the global event where Tamils across the world are being asked to mandate an independent Tamil Eelam.

@Selva,

The wishes of a diaspora that funded 30 years of war will never be considered. You are not Sri Lankans, but Tamils of Sri Lankan descent. Your voices don't decide for 2.5 Tamils in Sri Lanka, and it doesn't decide for 21 Million Sri Lankans.

Keep wasting your time, no one cares.

Well said Arjunan. How many of them are willing to come back and live in "Eelam"? Not even 185! Don't spread hatred amongst Sri Lankans! People in the North want to leave peacefully!

Tamil people of Sri Lanka in every country so far have given 99.5% or so endorsement of a separate nation. This is essentially every Tamil person. If a similar poll were conducted in Lanka, I would bet on a similar result.

Lanka would have to essentially ban any Tamil of ever setting foot on Lanka. You might even have to deport all Tamils living in Lanka now.

You can force a person to hold a flag but you can not force them to love a nation.

None of these 64,000 Tamils will come to Sri Lanka, even if Elam is granted. They are well set in the UK!

Quite the opposite if you look at the election results, areas with Tamils voted overwhelmingly against the Rajapaksa. Shows differences along ethnic lines. Many Tamils didn't even bother voting even after Prabha is gone.

Sorry, Jane! If Tamils want a separate state, becuase of their ethnicity, the place for that is their place of racial origin - Tamil Nadu, NOT Sri Lanka! Tamils in Sri lanka have to learn to fit-in with the rest, instead of demanding 33% of the land mass and 66% of the coastline for only 6% of its polulation, currently living in the mythical 'Elam area.' While on this subject, can you, Jane, please confirm whether all Tamils, residing elsewhere in Sri Lanka, are willing to give-up their present abodes?

Very Good. Now establish the Tamil Eelam in UK. That is the wish of 64,000 UK Tamils.

We Sri Lankans should support the democratic rights of UK minorities. UK government should listen to the grievances of UK Tamils and allow them a fair amount of self rule under the frame work of British Union.

These diaspora are enjoying the life's all luxurious things and voted for their Tamil siblings in Sri Lanka go to hell again...by creating an illusion of Tamil Elam. Why can't they come here and stage a war for what they call Tamil Elam! They will never like to come here and stay ..at the same timethey want us to suffer by waging war!
Please let us live peacefully..Ok?

Tamils will come back when they know they will never be bombed by Lankan army when Tamil Eelam is secured.

In Response to: Why can't they come here and stage a war for what they call Tamil Elam.

Please sir Prabha is gone. Let's not start another war. Tamil Diaspora will continue with the democratic process. We will force Lanka to give our country in a peaceful manner. Blowing up buildings, trains and people is not a manner of achieving that nor should it be endorsed by any.

From now on the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam will be formed and voice the opinion of the Tamil people not Prabha.

In the meantime the people of Lanka should expect worse economic conditions until there is an amiable solution based on a 2 state solution that is satisfactory to all.

This so called POLL is a JOKE! There is no room for terrorists in Sri Lanka. The Tamil Diaspora in Europe should realise this reality; NO EELAM!

No more terrorism sir. That you can be sure of. From now on democratic methods only as Prabha is dead. The Tamils will lead themselves from now on form their own representatives. They will force Lanka to give them Eelam through democratic conventions.

The POLL IS NOT A JOKE! Accept the reality of Lanka!

You can force a man to hold a flag but not to love a nation. That may only come from free will alone.

I support Tamil Elam in the UK. Yes, tamils, petition your British Parliamentarians for Tooting in South London! To be followed by Indians in Wembley and Bolton, Pakistanis in Lecister/Luton, Jamaicans in Brixton/Peckham, Africans in Lewisham, Turkish and Greeks in Wood Green and Southgate and Polish and Other Eastern Europeans everywhere else. Indeginous British can come to SL as Colombo 7 crowd are here to lick your boots!

We dont care what peole who live out side our country think, nor are we going to poll any one in SL asking if they want seperate state. If the tamil still want their own state please go to tamil nadu..there is no room for them in SL. As far as we are concerned they have left the coutry and are citiznes of another. you have no say on what we do.

I think UK should give part of its country to Tamils to establish Ealam. Same way France, Norway, Sweden can act. Then the problem is solved and we will be having more than one ealam

If they want this Elam, why don't they set it up in India, where the majority of Tamil people in the world are. To want a small country to be cut up even smaller doesn't make sense. Going to a place where there is a minority and demanding a separate state is ludicrous. Why does this Elam have to be in Sri Lanka. The election results of the majority Sri Lakans as well as the costly war carried out last year seems to have spelled out that they don't want Elam. Why should they want to force this result with the evidence to the contrary?

Jane Warrant, who has been 'bombing' whom? It's the LTTE who has been bombing non-Tamils for the last 30 years! The only 'Tamils' that were 'bombed,' were those running around armed to their teeth & wearing cyanide capsules! One third of residents and two thirds of property owners, in Colombo, are Tamils - who is 'bombing' them? So many lies, deceit and fraud are necessary to support the concept of Eelam! UK Tamils will finally destroy the UK, with their separatist fanaticism!

Yes, the Tamil people do want to live in peace, but as equal and free people, in their motherland! Both, Tamils and Sinhalese have the same ancestry. So stop these provocative statements!
