Lanka briefs Ban on post-conflict situ

E-mailPrint
The United Nations today said that Sri Lanka briefed the UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-moon on the ongoing post-conflict reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, and for an exchange of views on different aspects of them.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told media in New York that the high-level delegation from the Government of Sri Lanka, which included the Attorney-General and the Foreign Secretary, paid a courtesy call on the Secretary-General yesterday.

“This provided an opportunity for the delegation to update the Secretary General on ongoing post-conflict reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, and for an exchange of views on different aspects of those efforts,” he said

Commenting on the UN Expert Panel on Sri Lanka, he reiterated that “it is not essential for the Panel to visit Sri Lanka.  There are other ways for the Panel to gather the material that it needs to do the job on accountability that it has been asked to do by the Secretary-General, to advise him.  And on the timing, the Panel will let us know when they are ready to let you know.”

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his chief of staff Vijay Nambiar met Wednesday Attorney General Mohan Peiris, Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasinghe and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, former General Shavendra Silva in New York.

This move is really a total let down and betrayal of the death-defying efforts of our super patriot Gel Wansa who staged a big "farce to death" to defend the rights of independent, socialist republic of Sri Lanka against undue interference from Ban Ki Moon's UN. It us high time for him to launch another fast unto death sans "Lemon Puff"

First the government shows bravado saying the UN panel cannot dictate terms to them. which includes the infamous fast unto death by Hon Minister Wimal Weerawanse, then they deny that there had been no meeting taken place. But all the while there intention had been to cow down to the panel. It will do good for the government to keep their mouths shut. Our countrymen abroad could have some respect.
