145th Founder’s Week Celebrations by the Wesley College OBU Colombo Wesley College 145

Wesley College-a leading, Christian Boys School in Colombo was founded on the 2nd of March 1874. Every year, the Double Blue Fraternity gather to celebrate the memory of their Founder, the Rev. Daniel Henry Pereira – on Founder’s Day on the 2nd of March, which is the death anniversary of Rev. John Wesley the great Evangelist and Founder of the Methodist Church.   

This year 2019 Wesley College Colombo celebrates its 145th Birth Anniversary. Founder’s Day is considered the most important event in the School’s calendar.

In the last 145 years, Wesley opened its doors to provide education for thousands of Sri Lankan boys from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds, even though this institution was envisaged to be distinctly a Christian Boys School.   

Wesley College Colombo has produced many Distinguished Alumni, who have contributed invaluable service to the Society, Nation and the world. In the past 145 years many brilliant Old Boys have lived up to the ideals and values of the Founders, bringing honour and glory to their Alma Mater through their professions, and they will continue to inspire future generations of Wesleyites.  

The Founder’s Week celebrations this year will be held on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of March as Follows: On the 1st of March at 8.00 a.m. there will be a Special Assembly at the College Hall. In the afternoon at 4.00 p.m, there will be the Hockey and Football Matches between the Old Boys and Present Boys at the College grounds.   

This is followed by the Traditional Principal’s Tea Party at 5.30 p.m hosted by the Principal Mr Avanka Fernando. At 6.30 p.m. the Water Polo encounter between the Old Boys and present Boys will be held at the College Pool.  

On Saturday the 2nd of March the Past Versus Present Basketball match will take place at the College Basketball Court at 8.00 a.m. This will be followed by the 20/20 Cricket Match Old Boys Versus Present First XI Team at Campbell Park from 9.00 a.m. onwards.  

The Traditional OBU Lunch will be at 1.00 p.m. on the 2nd March at the College Hall, followed by The Annual General Meeting of the Wesley College OBU Colombo which will be at 3.00 p.m. Tickets for the Lunch are priced at Rs.1500/= and can be purchased from the Secretary of the OBU Fowzil Nawaz Secretary OBU- 0777900808, and Jansz the Manager OWSC at the Club House.  

The Special Thanksgiving Founder’s Day Service will be held at the College Chapel on the 3rd of March at 8.30 a.m.  The President and Executive Committee of the Old Boys Union of Wesley College Colombo invite all Double Blue loyalists to be present and participate actively in the Founder’s week events, and the AGM on the 2nd of March.
