The Book Challenge

It was a challenge on social media, from my kindred reading buddies, to post the cover of a book that I have read and loved for seven continuous days and invite one other reader to the challenge each day of posting.

I was in two minds on whether to take this up but finally caved in and named seven books that I had read in my youth. All of us born in the 1960s will recall that we had to make up our own entertainment, which included socialising with neighbouring children and reading.

I remember vividly the first big fat book I read, Gone with the Wind. I was absolutely captivated with this epic novel and could not put it down for a moment; so much so that I faked illness and stayed at home to complete reading it

I began reading on my own when I was around ten years old and my first favourites were the good old Enid Blyton books.  After reading her, I segued into Laura Lee Hope, who wrote the Bobbsey Twins and then the Agatha Christie mysteries.  When I was older it was James Hadley Chase and so on. I remember vividly the first big fat book I read, Gone with the Wind.  I was absolutely captivated with this epic novel and could not put it down for a moment;  so much so that I faked illness and stayed at home to complete reading it.

It is unfortunate that I do not read as much these days. I must confess that I am caught up in this social media trend

I was fascinated with Scarlett O’Hara. My bestie Chandri and I used to discuss the book in detail and imagine most of the scenes, as in them days we had no opportunity of seeing the movie.  When we did see the movie, were we not in our element. My sister, who has always been an avid reader, still recommends books that I would like and give them to me.

It is unfortunate that I do not read as much these days.  I must confess that I am caught up in this social media trend.  Of late, I put away my phone for many hours to avoid checking it all the time.  But then my addiction to playing Scrabble on-line gets me all caught up with the phone again.

My movie addiction is another distraction that keeps me from reading Reading should be a priority as it is good for mental stimulation, stress reduction, knowledge, vocabulary expansion, memory improvement, stronger analytical thinking skills, improved focus and attention, better writing skills, tranquillity and free entertainment. Perhaps I should just chuck my smart phone for a normal one and get my concentration back to reading as I do like reading, and once I get involved in the book, I never put it down. I must thank the Book Challenge on Facebook which has perked my interest in books by just looking at the variety of book covers that people had uploaded.

Happy reading everyone.
