Narada Wijesuriya Clinches state award for best lyricist

Seasoned journalist, poet, author and lyricist Narada Wijesuriya recently clinched the state television award for the lyrics he penned for the tele drama ‘Thaththa’. Narada’s song ‘Hadannata Wehi Binduwak’ was nominated for the award together with veteran lyricists Mahinda Chandrasekara and Wasantha Kumara Kobawaka.

“Being nominated alongside giant wordsmiths like Mahinda Chandrasekara and Wasantha Kumara Kobawaka itself was a big honour for me. Don’t ask me how I feel after winning the award? It is indeed a significant achievement in my life and career. Rohana Dharmakeerthi who is the music director won the award for his music,” Narada told Daily Mirror Life Impulse.

“This award came for the theme song I wrote for ‘Thaththa’. It was about the unspoken love, affection and suffering of a father. The father is serving long prison term. His little son grows up but never visits him in prison. In fact his son is not aware of his father but the father assumes his son deliberately ignores him. After years, the son learns the true story and decides to visit his father, but by then his father had died,” he said.

“I always feel that rain is a divine blessing. Though we try to avoid getting wet in the rain, if we only know how a rain drop is created, we will soak ourselves in the rain for the rest of our lifetime. I compared this to the affection of a father who never shows his love openly, unlike a mother. A father bears all the sorrow all by himself and pile it up in the bottom of his heart, never expressing it. I recollected loads of childhood memories which highlighted my father’s affection for me. But by the time I realised his selfless love, it was too late. I could not even say sorry when he was alive,” said Narada who recently wrote songs that has already become popular among music lovers.

Amarasiri Peiris ‘Me Irayi Handai Thani Ahasaka’, Lakshman Hewawitharana’s ‘Hanthanata..” and Umali Thilakaratne’s ‘Oba Gindara Dalu Pirichcha’ are some of Narada’s most popular songs today.

Today Narada focusses more on travel. He travels to exceptional and significant destinations in the world, makes documentaries about them and has started writing travelogues.
