Earth tremor felt in SL

An earth tremor has been felt in some parts of the country including Colombo, Diyatalawa, Nuwara Eliya, Hatton and Ratnapura areas around 9.52 pm today (26) , the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau said. No damages or casualties reported so far.

Officials are further investigating into the earth tremor, the GSMB said. The public is advised not to panic.

On May 20, a minor tremor was felt in the hillcountry measuring 3.0 on the Richter Scale.

There's no way of predicting earthquakes as of yet so early warning is not possible. Tsunami early warning; we already got a system in place covering eastern Indian Ocean.

For Earthquakes, early warnings are not possible; for Tsunami it is possible if it is generarated some distant away. What we need is a sound set of Building Guidelines and evaluation of risky buildings. The next is educating the people Safety measures and orderliness and responsibility in dealing with crisis, if ever one occurs.

3.0 in Richter scale is not something huge and noticeable very much. Where was the epicenter? Could this be the usual case of hydrological pressure releases from beds of huge reservoirs?

Gamini - i am inclined to agree with you bearing in mind the location of the reported tremors. The Dept. has said it was 0.2 or 0.3 which is barely noticable. I think this theory makes sense.
