Errors in A/Level results

E-mail Print

The Advanced Level results which were released late last night contain errors in the calculation of district and island ranks. Sources at the ministry of education stated that there is a strong possibility of the results that were issued being suspended.

There have been many reports from the different parts of the country that even the Z score and the results of certain students are erroneous. The Examination ministry previously stated that only the rankings were inaccurate. Some students allege that they have recieved results for subjects they werent candidates for during the examinations held in August.

Oh great.

Everyone knew there would be two syllabi this year since two or more years ago - when the new syllabus was introduced. Still they all had to wait until the result announcement date to realize that there will be an issue with two different Z-scores, and yet they can't get it right.

You are playing with students lives, careers and their future. Can't you just be a bit more careful with these. Now the Education Minister can say again that he doesn't understand these. When will someone take responsibility.

I am amazed at the level of sheer incompetence and callousness displayed by the Ministry of Education -
1.the Ministry was aware of the different syllabus's in use for 3 whole years.
2. The Ministry was also aware of the of the issues that would arise from these differences.
3. The Ministry was further aware of the technical issues in grading such an examination.
4. The various dates and deadlines that were given was false and misleading.
5. The errors created after the results were released - District Rankings and Island rankings were withdrawn
The news is disconcerting and displays complete and utter ignorance: It more over displays a complete disrespect towards the 250,000 odd students who sat for this examination.
Is this the sophistication of the education department?
The Minister is finally responsible that this errors should never have been committed and ought to dignify his situation with his immediate resignation.

Please take time and start from the point of entry of results if the confidence of the young generation and their parents are to be retained. Seems like a system error to me. As I have learned before, the algorithm used to calculate the Z-Score changes based on the overall marks of the entire students on a specific stream. May be the change this time may have caused the system to become unstable. If the system is fully automated, most likely there are three reasons for the errornous results.

1. Data entry is faulty or
2. The query which has been designed to retrieve the data is faulty or
3. The database structure have been changed and they forgot to change the query to march the database.

Any how what has happened is simply happened. The authorities should be more careful on handling these kind of sensitive information.

this is a crime committed by SL governemnt and its foul mouthed minister against the srilankan students. The brighter students who would become excellent doctors are now left in the lurch. Our moda minissu dont undertasnd the blow.

Don't get angry. We will get to know the followings

1) Examination Dept made a mistake

2) Minister is very angry about it and warned the dept to be more careful

3) Minister intervined and ordered a full scale inquiry.

4) Educated people supports minister's decision and says it is SO GREAT for minister to think about the students

5) As usual we paste a sticker on our face as FULL TIME IDIOTS and wants our team perform better in South Africa ignoring a burning issue with our future generation.

6) Minister become HERO and Dept of Examination becomes VILLION

Thank You. Hope the match will start on time.
