Saudi suspicious

The Saudi embassy issuing a communiqué said they have suspicions regarding the housemaid who had been inserted with 24 nails by her Saudi employer saying she cannot pass check points without being detected.

The statement said that there are many doubts regarding this allegation, saying the housemaid cannot pass security check points and sophisticated machines in the airports of Riyadh and Katunayake with the nails in her body.

It also said that the Saudi Ambassador is giving personal attention to this matter and is continuing communication with the officials of the Ministry of External Affairs in Sri Lanka.

L.T Ariywathie underwent a three hour surgery to get the nails removed last Friday and she is now recovering. (Daily Mirror online)

First, Saudi Authorities should check the devices being installed. This is the first case that was reported and without checking they cannot comment. Best thing is enter 24 nails into the body of the respective employer and ask him to go through the check points. Such an act is not against the Saudi Arabian Law.

This shows what the Saudis are trying to do. Simply ignore the whole episode by saying the maid 'self inflicted' the nails. Medical results cannot tell a lie and will give the exact period the objects were inserted, obviously she could not have done it on her own. This may have to be taken up with international bodies to give redress to her.

Metal detectors dont pick up these metallic objects which such a small signature. You need to have a certain square area of metal to trigger an alarm,

when i was traveling the pin of my diabetics checker was even detected. i wonder how more than 15 nails each around 2 inches or more didnt get detected!!!

Metal detectors working or not, by-passed or not, the question remains to be answered: the nails got into her body somehow and they were removed when she returned. Hurling insults at the people in Riyadh, though maybe deserved, also misses the point: Ariyawathie's case must be addressed directly

If Alarm goes on. Then there will be body checkup (palpation) by the security officers. That is the routine. I have gone through with my keys and continue flying after body checkup. Females clothing often contain metal appendages. It is an excuse to escape from crime.

There are people with metal pins and plates permanently
attached to their bones who go through detectors and cause alarms to activate, which is normal. Of course the officials would check such passengers first and then let them on board. In this case, too, alarms would have activated, but without anything suspicious to stop her from boarding. Obviously, she was not going to say "I have nails inside." She would have been trying to get out of that miserable place as soon as possible and must have been mortally scared to tell the airport security about the nails, thinking that they might not allow her to leave. If the Saudi Embassy suspects her story, then the suggestion is that she must have inserted the nails herself, after she arrived in Sri Lanka - How absurd is this?

Those who travel frequently would have experienced what security staff at many airports do when the detector beeps. They would do a body check and if nothing is found and especially if the passenger is an elderly women, they would look at each other quite baffled and allow the passenger to go through, ignoring the alarm. I believe that the Ambassador must be aware of this fact, though he wants to jump in to a conclusion, to dismiss the allegation. Anyhow, he should surely knows how his people treat the maids from third world countries.

When you possess small metal articles, the device does detect! But, when you go through a hand-frisk, which is the next step, security cannot detect any substance physically! This concludes the incident and you are allowed to pass through!

Yes, just blame the victim. If enough of doubt is created, then the people too will have doubts? Typical Saudi attitude. Maybe the alarm went off and she was bodily searched. A body-search would not have located the embedded nails. In any case the surgeons would know by the growth of scar-tissue how long the nails would have been in her body.

I have had metal plates and 7 screws on my broken ankle and travelled through airports including Heathrow where I was never detected to have impurities of metal in my body... This is so stupid.... Accept your faults Saudi...

It is possible that te conniving Saudi Authorities would have taken this maid away from the metal detectors at the airport. Worth investigating.
