Government to monitor NGOs

The government said today that there must be a surveillance mechanism to monitor the funds and activities of NGOs to ensure that they do not work against the government, a senior government minister said.

Cabinet Spokesperson Prof. G.L. Peiris said that the government had obtained information that many local and international NGOs were involved in domestic politics and other acts violating the country’s law.

“A monitoring system for the NGOs is essential. We have received information that many local and international NGOs are working against the government. Therefore they must be transparent in their funds and activities,” Prof. Peiris told journalists. (SAJ)

Before that, we need a mechanism in place to monitor buffoons like you and the other old age free hoarders of parliament to know whether any credible work is done to the country and public inretrospect to the wages, benefits and entitlements aquired each month not excluding the pension in five years.

Start from your own foundation. How many MPs & Ministers have formed NGOs? What are they doing. They all are not for profit foundations approved by the parliament. You should beging monitoring them !

Surveillance mechanism should comprise the people of highest intergrity. If not the whole purpose will be lost and they will eventually become part of their payroll..

The NGO/INGO issue has been a political football for a long time now. If the government feels that some of these NGO;s are acting illegally ( which could mean anything ) then why not simply kick them out, without continuously criticizing them. The government is singing the nationalistic song once again to appeal to people who think that we are under attack by western forces. In fact all INGO's have a signed MOU with the government and have to prepare annual accounts. There is even an accounting standard issued by the ICASL for NGO's. This is another piece of nonsense following on the statement he made about taking the EU to court (Aluthkade ? ).....but you know... some people actually believed GL on the court issue !

That is fine.....as long as someone can monitor the government and keep track where all that money is going.
