The Election Commission yesterday urged those who had not received their polling cards to vote at today’s election.
It said they could check if their names are in the electoral register by entering their NIC numbers on the EC website or check with the grama niladharis if their names are in the electoral list so that they can proceed to cast their vote with a valid identification.
Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya told Daily Mirror that following reports of several voters not having received their polling cards, those voters could check if they were on the electoral list and if they were it would enable them to vote today.
We request all voters to cast their votes today
“If they are on the list, they can even go to the post office and collect their cards. If not, they can check on the elections commission website or their respective grama niladharis if they are on the list. If their names are there, they can submit any valid identification card at the polling booths. We request all voters to cast their votes today,” Mr. Deshapriya said.
As of last evening, there were reports of several voters not having received their polling cards leading to confusion and uncertainity whether they could vote in such cases.
Nearly 450,000 polling cards were also reported to be lying at post offices as of this weekend with the postal department urging voters to visit their area post offices to collect their cards.
Uncollected poll cards will be available at post offices till voting ends at 5 p.m. today.
