The surge of COVID-19 cases will continue at least for another couple of weeks, an official said. Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told Daily Mirror any downward trend could be expected only afterwards.
Therefore, he said tight health precautions should be enforced during this period to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.
Commenting on the fatalities, he said most fatalities were caused by the COVID-19 induced pneumonia during the current wave whereas it was mainly due to other health complications worsened by the coronavirus during the first and second waves.
“It means quite a number of deaths are caused by COVID-19 itself,” he said.
