The second tier of the UNP leadership, already ientified, would be brought to the forefront shortly, party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.
Addressing the UNP youth wing Yowun Peramuna members at the party Headquarters Sirikotha, Mr Wickremesinghe said the new faces would be assigned to handle the party affairs soon.
“We have created a second tier of leaders. They will be kept in the front. The party will introduce new faces at the next General Elections,” Mr Wickremesinghe said.
“I have handed over the task of handling Parliamentary affairs to Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, who has been named the Leader of Opposition. We have to think of the party’s future now,” he added.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said the entire Opposition could obtain a total of 105 seats at the General Elections if it maintained the number of votes they got at the Presidential Election.
“It will be possible to safeguard the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and Human Rights if the Opposition obtained a total of 105 seats in Parliament. However, we can get a majority of 113 seats, if the campaign is handled effectively. We need to attract the majority community. Yovun Peramuna should try to attract young voters
as well,” he said.
“We will not get anywhere near it if we keep blaming each other. No one should get discouraged by the setback we suffered at the Presidential Election.
“We should follow our past leaders such as J. R. Jayewardene, R. Premadasa and the then-Mayor of Colombo, who went into the UNP headquarters and started work immediately to rebuild the party. Those including Mr. Jayewardene went to the UNP headquarters and found that lights and fans in some rooms were still on. They switched them off, started to sweep the building themselves and then began the re-organizing work. We have to follow this example,”
