Influence on the weather of the island by the Cyclonic storm “AMPHAN” was expected to reduce from today, Department of Meteorology said yesterday.
“The Cyclonic storm ”AMPHAN” lay centered over North-west Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood, at 8.30 am on May 20 near latitude 19.8°N and longitude 87.7°E, about 1420 km North-east of Trincomalee, the department said. “It is very likely to move further north-northeastwards away from the island across the Bangladeshi coast during the afternoon today, it added. Meanwhile, it said there was a possibility that near shore areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota might experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having 2.0-2.5-metre in height.
Therefore, the department advised naval and fishing community not to venture into the Northern Bay of Bengal sea area until this evening.
