The Cabinet on Wednesday approved to slash 25% of the cost of electricity bills of March, April and May this year as a relief to consumers who used less than 90 units a month, as they had used power excessively in the aftermath of the Covid 19 pandemic, cabinet spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana said.

Addressing the weekly cabinet news briefing yesterday, Minister Gunawardana said the government would explore the possibility of extending the relief further as a vast majority of the public have taken the brunt of the after shocks of the viral infection and almost all of them were low income families.

Minister Gunawardana said the CEB offered this relief to consumers  targeting 7.2 million low income families in particular and those who  use less than 90 units of power per month.
“Power, Energy and Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera submitted an expert report prepared by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to the cabinet and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several Ministers expressed their views on the matter. Finally, the cabinet unanimously decided a 25% cut of the tariff of the electricity bill for three months from March to May,” Minister Gunawardana said.

The income levels of those employed in various sectors have collapsed since the people had to stay at home from March to May 2020 due to the Covid-19 epidemic situation in the country. Considering this situation the Minister of Power and Energy appointed a committee to submit recommendations including concessions on the electricity bills, he said.
Accordingly, the report submitted by the said Committee was presented to the Cabinet by the Minister of Power and Energy. The Cabinet of Ministers decided to request the Minister to carry out further study on the recommendations through the Treasury officials and to submit his proposals at the next meeting on the concessions that could be given to the public.
