As expected, the Senior National Selectors rested skipper Virat Kohli for the one-day international series against Sri Lanka and elevated his deputy in limited-overs cricket Rohit Sharma as the captain for the three-match rubber, beginning December 10 in Dharamsala.

Kohli will be playing the third and final Test in Delhi while it remains to be seen if he would be back leading in the three-match T20I series against the same opponents. The MSK Prasad-headed committee also deferred the selection of squads for the South African Tests next year. It is learnt that the team for South African tour will be named during the course of the third Test in Delhi.

Rohit would be leading the side for the first time in an international game and he has more or less the same team that took on New Zealand late last month in three-match series. Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer, who made his T20I debut against New Zealand has taken Kohli's place in the side, while Punjab paceman Siddarth Kaul has replaced Mumbai paceman, Shardul Thakur. Kaul has been rewarded for his performance in IPL this year when he took 16 wickets in 10 matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

While R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who shone in India's innings win here by claiming eight and five wickets respectively, continued to be ignored for the limited-overs matches, Hardik Pandya was recalled to the ODI squad after seeking rest from the ongoing Test series.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who sought a break from the second Test for personal reasons, is back in the squad for the final Test. His presence throws up multiple options for the two opening slots. Dhawan's addition is the only change to the squad that played the second Test here.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, meanwhile, will be back in the ODIs. The paceman got married last week and had taken break from the last two Tests.

Squad for the third Test: Virat Kohli (captain), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Vijay Shankar

ODI squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul.
