An island-wide curfew was declared over the weekend in order to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. While the curfew resulted in a complete shutdown of services across the island, it has resulted in a unique problem for the large number of stray dogs in the hill-country estates.
A considerable number of stray dogs in the hill-country suburbs depend on food waste from restaurants, leftovers from fish markets as well as food provided by certain individuals in the area. With the closure of services since yesterday, we observed that these dogs were left hungry and roaming the towns in search of food.  In Hatton, one stray dog was seen approaching several police officers on duty, asking for food. (Ranjith Rajapaksha-Hatton)

Put them down to end the suffering please.

Maduranga Ekanayake Sunday, 22 March 2020 09:42 AM

How about someone puts you down to end your suffering?

    Dg Sunday, 22 March 2020 09:57 AM

And do the same for you.

    Jude Sunday, 22 March 2020 10:12 AM

    Your an idiot.

Rescue Pirate Sunday, 22 March 2020 10:21 AM

They have the right to live! Just because our country is negligent to adopt them doesn't mean killing them is the Solution.

    Mm Sunday, 22 March 2020 10:52 AM

Saman89 you need to be put down. You talk like this because the dogs don’t have a voice ???

Thushan Jayaratne Sunday, 22 March 2020 11:05 AM

Please let the good lord or karma put you down to end the suffering of humanity caused by people like you!

    Dee Sunday, 22 March 2020 12:05 PM

Usually people with no proper background or upbringing respond like this. For them a dog is always a stray and competition for them.

    Ragula Sunday, 22 March 2020 09:23 AM

What a loving heart that police officer is having.

Neomy Deen Sunday, 22 March 2020 10:10 AM

The picture speaks a thousand words. The policeman has a heart too.

This story of compassion, at a time when we are worried about our own existence, must be lauded. Let's all be human and find a way to feed the hundreds of starving cats and dogs right now. Many of them have babies of their own, and we never saw these helpless beings ar supermarkets.

Deserted roads in Hatton were shown in the Shakthi TV news on the 21st. One black stray dog was seen crossing on the pedestrian crossing. It was an incredible scene though it was only a glimpse.

Typichal Srilankan mentality. Srilankans are good to show love and empathy for animals but will not hesitate to kill human beings for petty things. The killing of two prisoners in Anuradhapura a is one such example.

Shirani Perera Sunday, 22 March 2020 01:37 PM

You are going off track Milton. The prisoners tried a good trick to start a fire and get out. It didn't work if not for the security personnel. We must hail the security folks.

Acts of kindness is a light that shines on the whole world. What a beautiful act by this kind police officer. We are so proud of you sir.
