Nope! Not even close. Buddhism is not about going to temple an chanting. But they do provide a therapeutic effect or an escape for some. For example Mettā /Mettā bhāvanā alone does not get you to Nibbāna but to some poeple it is critical to developing things like compassion. I go to this very temple once a week or so to clear my head and get away from the every day world for few hours.

Your reasons are fine. But being in such a place doesnt lead me to clear any thoughts at all. It is a chaotic situation where everyone seem to be 'rushing and pushing others' to earn merits. Just like any other human enterprise in Srilanka. Buddhism is far more nobler than that. We usually miss the finer points and simply follow the rituals.

Actually Buddha taught humans how to live and to be a good human being and showed the right path. Whether you are a Buddhist or any religion it is the right way. However the sad part of the story is present day majority of humans and monks have created their own versions of the Buddha's teaching for their own betterment. This is the reality and the truth at present.

It is not an insult, when people are blind folded by rituals, traditions rather than being practical, whether buddhist, christian, hindu or moselm, they become radicals but never Get to live a worthy Life!

dear people let them do as they want...why bother make comments on it...what ever the religion there are only few religious people remaining in this planet...by go to church every sunday, pray five times a day or obtain sil every poya day doesn't make you a good human being...simply practice what you were asked without doing harm to any living being...

Sorry but what exactly do you mean ' let the people do as they want' ? Worse still, " why bother comment on it"? Any blind practice is fine under the guise of religious belief? We need to strive to do the good things and the right things. Not just anything.

Agree totally with your comment .The practices prescribed by Buddhism are a method to get rid of the negative behaviours and replace them with compassionate action. The transforming of one’s inner environment and outward behaviour in this way creates merit (punna). The practice of generating punna should not be disregarded as a means to emancipation. Its helpful to cultivate the mind and overcome selfishness, which is the main obstacle on the way to Nibbana. In short, karma is the law of cause and effect in the ethical realm. According to the concept of karma, one is not enslaved as karma is neither fate nor predestination imposed on us by some mysterious unknown power outside of our control. Each person has the power to divert the future course of one’s life and accept responsibility for one’s own state. How far one diverts it depends on oneself.

In order to attain Nibbana, one must eliminate akusala by cultivating kusala. According to Buddhism, evil that has its root in the mind can manifest through actions of body, speech and mind.
The evil manifested through bodily behaviour are:
1. Killing - various forms of violent behaviour involving causing physical harm to living beings
2. Stealing - the violation of the property right of another to satisfy ones own greed and selfish instincts
3. Sexual misconduct - the wrong indulgence in sensuous pleasures in ones sexual life

2. Harsh or unpleasant speech expressions of anger or ill-will
3. Slanderous speech intended to create dissension and conflict between people
4. Gossip or frivolous talk which serves no meaningful or useful purpose
The evil manifested through mental activities are:
1. Thoughts of intense greed
2. Thoughts of ill-will
3. Wrong beliefs that degrade one’s morality

That's the problem with the people practicing their religions. Islam is a peaceful religion however some people practicing it do opposit. Budhism is a nice philosophy has become a full of rituals which says do not even step on an ants but some people practice budhism kills human. .....so every religions teaches good but people practice them misunderstand or take portion of it and ignore most of it.

Lord Buddha taught two level of practices
1 Amisa Puja
2 Pratipatti Puja
There should not be any question we should do it or not since we have it taught clearly, lord Buddha specifically taught important practice is pratipatii puja but it does not mean you should not participate in such event like this, may be if we put our personal egos behind it will be no problem to do both without any concerns...
