For the first time in history, the Port of Colombo has achieved 5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), a press statement from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) said.
To mark the occasion, a ceremony will be held today at the SLPA’s Jaya Container, with the patronage of Port and Shipping Minister
Arjuna Ranatunga.
SLPA said with the latest initiatives implemented at the Colombo Port, operational volumes had shown a rapid growth compared to similar periods in the past.
SLPA said the arrival of ships at the Port of Colombo in the first 11 months of this year rose 31.1 percent year-on-year (yoy) to 3, 854.
The number of container ships rose 12.7 percent yoy to 3, 333 while conventional cargo vessel arrivals increased 80 percent yoy to 45.
Other cargo ships such as Liquid Bulk and RO-RO increased 9.5 percent yoy to 359. Similarly, other services such as bunkering, repairs and chandelling have also increased by 18.2 percent.
The Port of Colombo has handled 4,742,652 TEUs during the first eleven months of 2015, reflecting an increase of 5.9 percent compared to the previous year’s corresponding volume 4,480,318TEUs.
Transshipment containers including Re-stow throughput which accounts for 76.6 percent of the total Colombo Port volumes have achieved a growth of 5.1 percent. The domestic volume has also recorded a fair increase of 8.3 percent.
The total cargo tonnage handled in the Port of Colombo during the first eleven months of 2015 has increased to 67,255 thousand tonnes from previous year’s 64,726 thousand tonnes reflecting an increase of 3.9 percent.
A significant increase of 96.1 percent has been reported in Break-Bulk cargo handling. Containerized cargo has shown an increase of 3.5 percent.
“It is apparent that the latest initiatives have developed increased credibility for vessel operators to use Colombo as the fastest T/S Hub for In- Out cargo.
SLPA is also in the process of making more operational-friendly environment at the Port of Colombo with the accommodation of new operations machinery and increased terminal facilities,” the SLPA statement said.
