‘Raavana 1’ successfully deployed into orbit

Sri Lanka’s first satellite Raavana 1, designed and developed by two Sri Lankan research engineers, was successfully deployed into orbit a short while ago (3.45 pm).

Raavana-1 was deployed to the 400km of orbit at an inclination of 51.6 degrees using the JAXA (Japanese Aerospace and Exploration Agency) owned Kibo experiment module.

Two more satellites from Nepal (their first satellite), and Japan were also deployed at the same time. Raavana-1 is a cube-seized miniature satellite and Sri Lanka's first research satellite which was built by two Sri Lankan youth - Tharindu Dayaratne and Dulani Chamika - marking our entrance into the space age.

Raavana 1 was launched to the International Space Station in the 400km orbit by the Cygnus spacecraft of NASA on April 18 at 2.16 am Sri Lanka time by the rocket 'Antras.' (Sheain Fernandopulle)
