Colombo High Court today sentenced a trishaw driver to death for trafficking and retaining heroin.

The accused Pallegama Ralalage Sunil  Karunaratna Bandara of Gunasinghepura was sentenced to death by High Court Judge  Padman Surasena for possessing and trafficking 6.58 grams of heroine on September 23, 2007.

The accused was arrested near the  Rupavahini Corporation army barrier  at Bullers Road. The army had stopped the trishaw that the accused drew and had searched the trishaw and the accused for any suspicious things. Then they had recovered  a parcel of  heroin from the trouser pocket of the accused. At the time of the search there had been a  passenger in the vehicle who was released  later. The army had handed over the  accused to Cinnamon Gardens’ Police. (T.Farook Thajudeen)

whats the point of sentencing him to death when we don't enforce the death penalty. Just means he will remain in prison for a few years, courtesy of the tax-payer and be released in a few more. Crime is so rampant because, sadly, criminals are not duly punished.

Poverty drives people to illegal activities, specially in this case but death sentence is the not solution for it. For his mistake, its not fair to take his life over it. Specially with Sri lankan legal system, he may or may not be guilty first place.

Death sentence for 6.6 grams of heroin. How about the politically connected main heroin dealers. They go scot free.
    Miracle of Asia.

Instead of catching the small distributors, the Police should go after the main importers of drugs who are all in the Government. That's the only way to get rid of this menace. But the million dollar question is, who has the guts to go after the major importers.
