Sri Lanka has set an example in reconstruction, rehabilitation and reconciliation by re-settling over 10,000 IDPs or 93% of those who crossed over to the armed forces controlled side at the final stage of the humanitarian operation, Cabinet spokesman  Keheliya Rambukwella said today.

He said this is a record for a speedy and organized resettlement programme after a conflict for any part of the world.

The government has been successful in resettling 97% of the IDPs who were displaced soon after the 2009 humanitarian operation, in their native villages by October 2011 and the cabinet has given the approval to spend another Rs. 1,336 million to complete the resettlement of the remaining IDPs in their villages.

Accordingly, 1,687 families will be relocated in the Mullaitivu District, 1,272 families in Muttur in the Trincomalee Districts and 166 families will be relocated in the Mannar District, with the assistance of the Security Forces in the North and East.

Each family will be provided a house with a permanent toilet in addition to common dug wells and other facilities, he said. (By Sandun A. Jayasekera)
