Six university students have been arrested by the police for putting up posters saying that police officials involved in the death of Ruhunu university student Susantha Aruna Bandara should be arrested.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online the spokesperson for the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF), Udul Premaratne said these students were arrested last night in Nugegoda while they were putting up these posters.

While two Sri Jayawardenepura University students were arrested by the Kirulapone police, four students of the Indigenous medical faculty of the Colombo University were arrested by the Welikada police.

The students are placed in remand custody at present. He further said that the police had also removed cut outs placed at the Kelaniya , Sri Jayawardenepura and the Indigenous medical faculty of the Colombo University.

"We will be filing  a case at the Supreme court within this week as we think this is a violation to our freedom of expression," Udul said.

Meanwhile, when Daily Mirror online contacted Police media spokesman SP Prishanth Jayakody, he said he wasnt aware of such an incident as he had not recieved any details of these arrests. (Daily Mirror online)

    Dear Parents,
Please educate your child to not to get in to those kind of political troubles during their Uni life. If they were in their school time (Even if they were in A/L classes) don't you interfere and stop them doing things like that?
So let's start from home. Educate them. Ask them to study first. Its public money they are wasting. And they waste other students time/money as they also can't get in to the uni, if the uni closed.

Please please don't let this happen. This is not the first time. I think management of the uni has to be very strict on these kind of stuff as well.
Please conduct fair disciplinary check and do the needful against them.

    hejey Monday, 26 July 2010 06:53 AM

Blame those violent students and some politicians behind them, dont blame the universities; how can they be useless? If everything in this country is not good for you, join a boat going to Australia...
Proud of our universities; the quality maintained by our universities when compared with global standards...

    RF Monday, 26 July 2010 06:57 AM

Good move SL Police... Students are selected to the universities to study and not to put up posters wasting public money....

    hejey Monday, 26 July 2010 06:57 AM

Are you an alien? selected by the academic performances at AL exams and Z-score. These political involvements by university students must be stopped somehow. This behavior is not common now in the world, and even in the region...

    David Monday, 26 July 2010 07:05 AM

    Mr.Riyadah,
Those countries who have Democratic in their name don't have it in reality.
So sing "Don't cry for me .........."

    Sk Monday, 26 July 2010 07:13 AM

Where is the Democracy in Sri Lanka?

    MagodisThumadi Monday, 26 July 2010 07:18 AM

Postmortem report says cause of death is some kind of problem in blood vessels of the brain.
According to their behavior , it seems nowadays...lots of university students are suffering with this disease !.

    Anga Monday, 26 July 2010 07:54 AM

Do you know the reason why Colombo Medical Faculty doesn't have any problem like this? It is b'se those students are not allowing JVP to enter into their premises.
Even Uni of Moratuwa same. Only issue there is also the NDT is backed by JVP's. Engineering Fac of Ruhuna doesn't have any issues like this as they don't have JVP.
If you analyze all Sri Lankan universities carefully, you can clearly identify all universities with JVP connections get lot of problems... Like Kelaniya, Ruhuna, Ja'pura
We need to eradicate this JVP hand from all universities in SL. Then only those students can learn peacefully.

I'm talking from my university experience as I was a past medical student of Uni of Colombo.

Dear Students, Don't let those Political people to come in to your heads. You came there to learn. So first do it. Then you can think how you can align the country according to your vision.

    Anga Monday, 26 July 2010 07:58 AM

In a way true. That's why you don't get this sort of problems in private institutions. But we cannot do that as most of the people cannot afford that. So let's have it, while trying to find a way to stop this idiotic things.

    RF Monday, 26 July 2010 08:32 AM

    well said...

    bandy Monday, 26 July 2010 08:35 AM

asoka abeywardena Monday, 26 July 2010 06:36 AM

what ever the IGP or this so called police spokesman say, and what ever even the president of this country say, people of Sri Lanka know better how corrupted the police is.

    suwimal Monday, 26 July 2010 09:54 AM

moral of the story: Do not put up posters against the culprit when the culprit has the power to police your activities.

Nazar Hussein Monday, 26 July 2010 11:13 AM

Any university student convicted for their offence to date ????????.

    jeena Monday, 26 July 2010 11:38 AM

can somebody please define "UNIVERSITY "! and "POLICE" and lets all see posters of those definitions.

    jeena Monday, 26 July 2010 11:40 AM

Somebody sold the democracy for votes.

    Nandimithra Monday, 26 July 2010 12:41 PM

And hostage taking as well - all criminal.

    Nandimithra Monday, 26 July 2010 12:45 PM

Shall we settle the alleged murder and assault first. Discipline - as if the Police has even heard the word.

    Nandimithra Monday, 26 July 2010 12:47 PM

Yes even bark at the MOON.

    Nandimithra Monday, 26 July 2010 12:48 PM

Well said - that is the issue here - not most of the other things expressed.

    Sicillian Monday, 26 July 2010 01:39 PM

If it is IUSF I am with you my dear police. Arrest them and send them to prison. Bulk of hooligans.

    Azeem J Tuesday, 27 July 2010 08:01 AM

The major problem of University students that they don’t recognize what the intention their entering to a University. Also the behave of the cops is in Sri Lanka is extremely awful. So both of the two sides must be correct them selves ..

    raj Monday, 26 July 2010 04:48 AM

do you think police in Sri Lanka can find the culprit?

Dave Richard Monday, 26 July 2010 03:21 AM

I am a Colombo University Graduate entered the Uni in mid 80s. If the present day students know how much we suffered due to this ruthless IUSF no one will support them. If you are not in their line, they will corner u, abuse u, hit u and even kill u. They have even hit a pregnant student with clubs at that time.

Still they do the same. They simply fulfill JVP desires. For the sake of many generations to come they should be given capital punishment.... At least now Mr. SB D

    Suba Monday, 26 July 2010 03:35 AM

Cops are the very guys who put up posters for MR and then protected them during the Presidential campaign.

Many cops have been transferred for removing illegal posters of MR.

Double standards? MAHINDA Balasuriya must go home.

kasun liyanage Monday, 26 July 2010 03:38 AM

no it doesn't amount to freedom of expression. without knowing the facts of the case accurately, no one cannot publicly allege any one over commission of any offense. it is up to law courts to decide whether reprehensible party is guilt or not. no one is allowed to comment on case when its hearing is in progress in a court other than in parliament or those commentator will be guilt of contempt of court.

    kane Monday, 26 July 2010 03:42 AM

Why did not the police arrest WW when he staged the protest in front of UN office? Is it because of patriotism?

    sally Monday, 26 July 2010 03:43 AM

Students have no qualifications to investigate murder. let the Police handle it. Pl. don't be victims to politics - students.

    raj Monday, 26 July 2010 03:46 AM

instead of arresting these students, they should arrest and charge the person who was responsible for the murder

Island Watch Monday, 26 July 2010 04:06 AM

Is Mr Prishantha Jayakody a Police SP?

    Concerned Monday, 26 July 2010 04:14 AM

Arrest against which law of the country? Police spokesman, please clarify for the benefit of people!

    thusi Monday, 26 July 2010 04:20 AM

These people should be expelled from Universities...

    Thinuka Monday, 26 July 2010 04:43 AM

Universities students don't have discipline. They think once they entered to the University in Sri Lanka, they are the most Intelligent and best of best and acting like no one is beyond them.

Discipline is the 1st thing they should learn. Otherwise we can not make this country. Good move.

Calistus Jayatilleke Monday, 26 July 2010 03:11 AM

What we have is a unique law and situation where the culprits go scot free due to political influence and the complainants and protestors get arrested. Signs of a Police State, indeed.

Ash Di Spentaneous Monday, 26 July 2010 05:02 AM

I am pretty sure some students who are involved in ragging have done this.... useless universities and unscrupulous students. Everything in this country seems odd.

    Ananda S Monday, 26 July 2010 05:06 AM

I was at Kelaniya University from 1982-1986 and I hate the fact that JVP is using innocent students and doing all anti-goverment politics to destabilise the government. This is nothing new and JVP's pathetic attempt to destabilise the country after it is saved from LTTE shoud be condemned.

    deen Monday, 26 July 2010 05:06 AM

Please wither this free education and make them pay for what they study. You will not find any murder hence forth.

    Janaka Monday, 26 July 2010 05:09 AM

Free education, they don't care. Students and the politicians behave in a similer manner..

    RIYADH Monday, 26 July 2010 05:19 AM

Correct me if I am wrong the public in Sri Lanka can express the feeling right? Since Our country is following Democracy

    ruwan Monday, 26 July 2010 05:27 AM

today students tomorrow leaders ... let them be brave and bold ... not like today's leaders ... unqualified and corrupted ...

    Practical Monday, 26 July 2010 05:48 AM

Though I am not a fan of free education myself, please note the issue here is not about free education, but about the murder of a student. All these guys were doing is pasting posters seeking justice - and the police arrest these guys just because in this case the police themselves are the prime suspects.

Next time elections are around, I hope the police will show the same amount of enthusiasm and arrest all the croonies pasting posters of politikkas!

    ajith Monday, 26 July 2010 06:00 AM

The Universities should implement conditions when enrolling students with strict rules and regulation. The one who breaks should be expeled and the next should be given a chance.

Bluff Bluff Monday, 26 July 2010 06:31 AM

sorry RIYADH, that is allowed only if the feeling you are talking of is for the Government.

    Krish Monday, 26 July 2010 06:31 AM

How do they select the students for university, are they educated??
