A number of roads in Colombo will be closed to make way for the Colombo Night Races which is to be held on Friday and Saturday.

The roads will be closed from 8.00pm on Friday till 6.00am on Saturday and again from 6.00pm on Saturday till 6.00am on Sunday.

‘Electric Peacock Festival’ will be held at Chaithya Road tomorrow and on Saturday at 6.30pm featuring a number of artistes. Following the festival the races will start after 9.00pm, organizers said.

Public and private sector employees are advised to take alternative roads and take their vehicles or buses after finishing work at 4.30pm tomorrow, the police said.

The race will start from the Lotus Road in front of the Galadari Hotel. Then it will go through the Ceramic Junction, a left turn from the CTO Junction, Chatham Street, Baron Jayathilake Mawatha and then a left turn towards York Street and then towards the York Street-Bank Road Junction. From the junction, turn right towards Janadipathi Mawatha, NSA roundabout and finally back to Lotus Road.

Lorries and buses will not be permitted to enter from several places during the given time periods. The places are Colpetty Junction, Pittala Junction, Ibbanwala Junction, Gamini roundabout, Ceynor Junction and the Khan roundabout.

No vehicles will be allowed to enter the Fort area from the Galle Face roundabout, Regal roundabout, Khan clock tower, Olcotte Mawatha and the Ceynor Junction during the time the races will be held on Friday and Saturday.

Vehicles heading to Fort from Galle Road and again heading to the Galle Road will have to go through the Kollupitiya Junction, Pittala Junction, Lipton Circus, a right turn from the Ibbanwala Junction towards the Maradana Junction, Technical Junction, Fort and again from the Ceynor Junction towards the Galle Road.

Police also advised motorists heading to Fort from Havelock Road and again to Havelock Road to go through the Soyza roundabout, Lipton Circus, a right turn from the Ibbanwala Junction towards the Maradana Junction, Technical Junction and to Fort and then again from Ceynor Junction on the same roads back to Havelock Road. No half day is given but a open invitation to the race...

love fr country Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:31 AM

This is a good initiative and improving night life with lot of events and entertainment is an awesome idea for any country who wants to attract more and more tourist. if you go to any famous cities like Singapore, Dubai, LA , New York ,London ,Sidney they all are very good in night life and conduct lot of events but on dedicated facilities not on the busy streets .since we are developing and not up to that standard we can still use the roads but not from 4.30 rather after 9PM without screwing public . Broad minded public should be supportive to such events without putting blame on any and every. For how long we gonna be narrow minded? Anything that will make a country popular will be good for the country, why our stupid people don’t understand. In how many countries and magazine this race photos will be published and create a positive impression on people .did anyone think about that? Let’s make it a safe haven with lot of events and entertainment

    fuz_ha Friday, 16 December 2011 10:49 AM

Bro, having this kind of event is not d issue but the place which is CBD. You say there only 3 roads leading CMB r closed, ok fine. Have you traveled during after office hours on around CMB? Ppl who travel during these hrs would be able to testify the plight they go under in order to reach their destinations. If so you wouldn't say this unless of course u r also one of nocturnal birds on a hot wheel...

    SANJAYA Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:27 AM

Has government declared half day holiday for officers in thios area? if roads are closed from 4.30,how the working ppl go home after work?

grow up people Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:37 AM

Well said, when this stupid narrow minded people will learn? conducting such events show case the prosperity of our country to outer world ,that will attract more tourists and investments ,why these people worried about traveling one day when there are alternative roads .god bless my country n people ..They still think like in 1800s

    yash Friday, 16 December 2011 03:47 AM

i think we want this but all new generation work must be in low issues.

    Madanamuttha Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:44 AM

Developing country like us always think about the future. Like these events bring lot of tourists and exchange to the country. to develop we have to sacrifice some time. friends don't condemned all the happenings ! some days ago someone hit about the highways too ! but now ? every body using it. what a time save ? take it easy guys !
    Lamaya's friend !!!

    Aaron Friday, 16 December 2011 11:37 AM

Stupid Graduate Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:44 AM

What alternative route will get you out of the Galadari or Galle Face area?

    Umar Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:47 AM

all of you folks who are grumbling should just learn to understand the value when something non traditional happens! you have the remaining 363 days of the year to be 'productive' hats off to having some fun!

    WE NEED IT!!!!!

GO SL........ lets burn some rubber!!!!!

Mohan De Silva Saturday, 17 December 2011 07:27 AM

Something happening after 30 years entertainments gives refreshment for life we should have more similar events for all segments

    Nodrog Thursday, 15 December 2011 12:12 PM

Its nice to have these kind of events but it should not inconvenience the public. Katukurunda race track could have been easily used for this event.
Closing public roads for a race just shows we are not a serious nation and focus is not on progress but just to have unnecessary tamashas.

    Sugath Thursday, 15 December 2011 12:11 PM

Can you sugest some alternative routes for Continental Hotel , Cinnamon Lake , World Trade center, Cinnomon Grand ( Rear road is open but access roads closed) and all the officers in the Fort Area/ Kollupitya Area.
According to the map not only the "Race Track" is closed but all approach roads are closed.
Why could't they have it in Hambantota Area where the the are well dione and traffic is very little. ?

    RanjithSilva Thursday, 15 December 2011 01:37 PM

THIS IS NOT THE PLACE AND THIS IS NOT THE TIME.

    willows Thursday, 15 December 2011 06:49 AM

what a waste of time and public money, here we are grumbling high cost of gasoline, and these rich kids just burning for nothing???

    Lamaya Thursday, 15 December 2011 06:56 AM

This event is not conducted with the public's money. It is a privately organized event not government. Stop thinking like an old fashioned person. This will develop the sports in the country(racing)

    Rajitha Thursday, 15 December 2011 02:55 PM

    this is soo awesome!
can't wait to go and see.

    Esala Thursday, 15 December 2011 03:19 PM

This is 2011 not 1800 our people still in 1800. Doesn't like new things. Same like vegetable transport. The reason why we are still in ..........?

    Cyril E Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:23 AM

We had this in Kandy City too and it was tremendous

    Ke Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:25 AM

    Lamaya- Well said..
with few people in this country we cannot develop anything. In order to develop racing in this country and to give it a proper place, organizing events like this is a MUST.
Hats off to the Colombo Night Racer's Organizers.Awaiting for MANY MORE races like this in the future too.

    Citizen Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:26 AM

Can anyone let me know how the guests in Galadari, InterCon and Hilton travel about (for instance leave to the airport) when these roads are closed? Or do they have to leave the hotels before 4.30pm to catch a 12.30am flight?

franklin mathew Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:42 AM

    nice

    Falcon Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:38 AM

Main Rod's are closed, will develop the sports?? what a joke

    Kamalanath Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:43 AM

@ Lamaya, you need to grow, don't try to be child every day.
Who permits all this rubbish to happen in the heart of Colombo on a working day, by closing the roads, forcing the office's to be closed early and inconveniencing general public of transport.
And who will account for the productivity loss? Can a country develop like this?

It's this foolish government allowing all these shit to take place, taking the public at ransom. Why not use racing tracks developed for this purpose?

    saj Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:45 AM

Friday is a day a lot of commuters travel to and from work for the weekend. And if it is not pulic money who's money is it?

    ASK Thursday, 15 December 2011 07:49 AM

this is great !@# but there are much more important matters to deal. this race concept is good but not right now !!!!!

    DHA Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:03 AM

Finally some entertainment for race lovers.......

    Lamaya Thursday, 15 December 2011 04:43 PM

WELL SAID! 5 stars to you bro!

    lankan Thursday, 15 December 2011 04:49 PM

when we have all serious problems in the country to be resolved this is what going to solve the problems. What a joke ! As someone has commented , it is only for the rich folks to show off their wealth !

Loku Aiya Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:21 AM

You surely must be proud owner of a modified Maruti.... ;) Before you clap and cheer about the developing of the country's fledgling motorsports, why don't you guys get together and develop a more robust vegetable transportation system.

    Mama Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:17 AM

The hotels have been given an alternative route for their guests.

    Gameeka Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:22 AM

Err.... How to go home tomorrow... will be stuck till 6.00am on Saturday.... @##$^@#%^&^@& Dont have leave as well...

    Mahesh Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:22 AM

Lamayo, I'd like to hold a private race on the roads too. If I go to traffic police will they get it closed for me?

    S.V Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:28 AM

What about the people who work in these areas during these times??? how do they leave office.. whats about the people who work at WTC???

    prem Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:36 AM

wHAT ABOUT VEGITABLE MATTER IS NOW FORGOTTEN

    Hugo Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:45 AM

The sandbags and tyres makes the city so unpleasant. They should have tracks to do this. People gotta have a good sleep at night.

nipuni seneviratne Thursday, 15 December 2011 08:56 AM

We are not producing cars and we just started to assemble few of those. The countries do racing to prove a point of their product.
For us, we want to show the richness of some families and their ability to do anything, anyway and anytime...
Who need those races even does not have a car....
god bless (or blast) sri lanka
    NS

    fuz_ha Thursday, 15 December 2011 09:11 AM

As always they've manged to get hold of a good concept, but not the a good implementation. As it is already mentioned never taken into account of hard ship the ppl working around these areas have to undergo and the loss of productivity. Even during other weekends there's heavy traffic during eve's, can't imagine how it gonna be during this event... horrendous! Surely this could have been held at already existing tracks rather than wasting money (be it public or private) on a public and the efforts of the Forces (who r doing the work to lay sand bags n stuff around the track).

    John F Thursday, 15 December 2011 09:15 AM

Simple, use alternative roads. Use your mind bro.

    Ramesh Thursday, 15 December 2011 09:26 AM

This is a good event..There is a community in this country who are against all these events, musical shows etc & etc..I bet most of them are 50+ people who are didnt had these kind of opportunities when they were young..Some of them are against Nelum Pokuna ,Southern express-way , modernising Colombo & etc..We should just ignore these people who are still in colonial mindset and against our countries development .

Just Another Citizen Thursday, 15 December 2011 09:22 AM

If they can do this in places like Singapore, Monaco etc & make money from visitors/tourists (including Sri Lankan's), why can't they do it here? Why let the other countries have all the fun? FYI, in the places that I mentioned they close the roads for a week.

    SCW Thursday, 15 December 2011 09:37 AM

So have it in Kandy, don't bring them to Colombo...We actually work down here!!!

    Navin Thursday, 15 December 2011 09:45 AM

    a) Melbourne, Singapore, Monaco all close their public roads for the F1 races.
    b) Purpose built race track? How much do you think that will cost?
    c) Loss of productivity? Because we're such a productive country after 4:30 pm on Friday ?
    d) 5-star Hotels are paid high rates by their customers exactly so that they may make arrangements to prevent inconvenience to their guests. You don't worry about it. That's what hotel management is for.
    e) If you read the map you may observe that of 6 different routes to Fort, only 3 are closed to traffic. So commuters can still get to and from Colombo.
    f) The roads are closed to traffic, not to pedestrians. Obviously one of the reasons that roads have to be closed is for pedestrian safety (since we can't really trust drivers in SL to worry about things like pedestrian safety)

    psunil Thursday, 15 December 2011 09:43 AM

The flights too use these roads to drop off & pick up passengers in Colombo - Fort ....lol Not a bad idea

    MagodisThuma Friday, 16 December 2011 01:41 AM

    Lamborghini is running fast...!.

    ravishan Thursday, 15 December 2011 10:19 AM

How will they come out of their hotel?

    Johann Thursday, 15 December 2011 10:41 AM

Dont forget that thr spending millions on building the track..just to be taken off after the races..who's money are they wasting???

    sltk2004 Thursday, 15 December 2011 10:38 AM

Lets use the E1 southern highway. That's better than racing in these roads
