India will provide assistance to Sri Lanka in training judges under a Memorandum of Understanding that both countries are expected to sign.

The MoU will enable Colombo to send judges to Bangalore and Bhopal to receive training, Sri Lankan Justice Ministry said after a meeting between Justice Minister Athauda Senaviratne and Indian High Commissioner Ashok A Kantha yesterday.

Sri Lanka and India share a legal system based on the Roman Dutch law established by the British colonial rulers who ruled both countries until 1948 and 1947 respectively.

Sri Lanka has had an excellent tradition of jurisprudence and judiciary worthy of emulation for nearly a century. I really doubt the wisdom of the present move, and wonder why we belittle our professional and iconic institutions this way. History records that G. G. Ponnambalam's expertise was sought by Karunanidhi to defend himself against Sarkaria commisssion report. It looks as if our leaders are trying to please India in the hope that it will come to their rescue against international witch-hunts.

No need to train them...MR has given the proper training already.

    Anver Friday, 12 November 2010 11:46 AM

    Mushi Friday, 12 November 2010 10:00 AM

Indian training to judge Sri lankans in indian way..Is that Sri lankans judges incompetent? SL stand alone!!

    Deepal Friday, 12 November 2010 10:05 AM

To training or no training, judges will be commanded from the top. Judgments will be made for them. They would only have to read them out.

    zorro Friday, 12 November 2010 10:18 AM

are these judges not qualified to make judgments according to the prevailing legal system in the country? i mean don't we have a legal system independent of the judges and the charged? then we just need to call MR or GR to ask for the appropriate verdict in each individual case, and no low books!

    NISSANKA Friday, 12 November 2010 10:19 AM

Why we need India to train our judges ?. I can understand, if we get training from a place like Singapore. Not India for justice's sake.

    Jix Friday, 12 November 2010 10:23 AM

“India's legal system is hampering its economy and democracy”

Smart Aleck Friday, 12 November 2010 10:41 AM

Why not send Athauda and his Secretary for some training or rehabilitation?

Ruhunu Puthra Friday, 12 November 2010 10:51 AM

No training from anywhere is useless, untill & unless the independance of the judiciary is safeguarded by the constitution.

    Rajeev Friday, 12 November 2010 11:02 AM

There is no justice in India and more ever the legal system is entirely different from Lanka. In fact Sri lanka should develop its own independence than dependence on India

Kundu mali Friday, 12 November 2010 11:07 AM

This is a big joke, our system is perfect and the judges are cleaver and educated not like in India you pay money to get qualification . MR is taking our people for idots.
