Government Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday that the US must come up with a scheme to avoid harming friendly countries by its embargo on Iran -- or compensate them.

CPC managing director L.T.Susantha de Silva said that the US embargo on Sri Lanka’s main crude oil supplier Iran had taken its toll on Sri Lanka’s fuel sector, and hectic negotiations had already been started with other sources to fill the void created by the loss of crude from Iran.

While assuring the citizenry that every effort was being made to preclude a fuel shortage during the next two weeks if the country’s oil refinery at Sapugaskanda had to be closed due to lack of crude from Iran, Mr. de Silva said that every effort had been made to purchase crude from other sources.
However, the most suitable crude oil for the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery (SOR) is the light crude from Iran.

We will have difficulty in obtaining crude oil for the SOR only during the next two weeks. Steps have been taken to ensure a steady supply of crude oil from Saudi Arabia and Oman in November and December, said Mr. de Silva.

He said the CPC had ample stocks of fuel to prevent a shortage, and added that they intended to do some repairs at the SOR if it was temporarily closed down due to the lack of crude.

The SOR’s annual requirement is 14 consignments of 135,000 metric tons each of light crude imported from Iran. Sri Lanka had had to reduce the quantity of crude oil imported from Iran, from March 2011, due to the US embargo. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)

What happend to our own oil. Which our politicen planned to export.

nimal medis Friday, 26 October 2012 07:24 AM

The US still has the most powerful economy in the world. Their unemployment rate is still much lower than most other countries being at 7-8%. Compare with SL 15%. With the pressure building for China to stop their illegal currency floating it looks like the US will remain at no.1. All this US bashing is the propaganda of the middle east and SL.

Why on earth didn't our petroleum experts upgrade the reinery to cope with multitude of crude oils. This song of "our refinery can only use Iranian light crude" has been sung for the last so many years. Money spent on Hambantota port could have been utilised for this, saving the country billions of rupees!

    RamUK Friday, 26 October 2012 09:10 AM

If US gone poorer by 1 time we have gone poorer by 100 times ...

    Lankalion Friday, 26 October 2012 09:31 AM

Diminish the power of the USA and replace it with what? Dictatorial, corrupt and non-democratic regimes such as China and Russia? People should think carefully before they make their suggestions. If the USA, being a democracy, accountable to its people, with regular government changes can do so much damage, imagine the damage that could be done by a world dominated by Russia or China - countries which give scant regard to their own people - do you think they will give two cents about the rest of the world?

That fall in Australia must have jarred the Govt. Spokesman's brain somewhat. Do not compare the 'think tanks' in the White House with the 'dim wits' occupying chairs in the Parliment.

    Diplomart Friday, 26 October 2012 09:44 AM

Who gave sri lanka loans credit etc, Companies are not genourous to give credit to SL . when buys oil. Only Iran did that.

USA may become poor and we still ask them to help us at tough times! So how poor we must have become. And what do you think how many of our countrymen have trouble get one meal a day on their table? Use your brains or are you waiting for brain transplantation from the USA?

    Curious Friday, 26 October 2012 02:10 PM

Oh yeah, US does not have money and Sri Lanka has lots of them !

    Ashan Friday, 26 October 2012 03:44 PM

Don't worry with luck they will call for an early election in 2014.. You can get petrol at a reduced price for a period of 3-5 months so start building storage facilities now.

Why don't we buy oil from Russian oil companies. We should n't depend on Iran. It could wage war in Iran in 2013. so better to find alternative oil.

wise man Friday, 26 October 2012 03:48 AM

Absolutely right !! There should be some practical solutions to genuine issues like this. If not it will be something like where countries like SL being punished for a fault of Iran.

Al Rasa Friday, 26 October 2012 03:50 AM

Very true. Now all countries should fall in line to diminish the power of USA as first country of the world.

Big Ears Friday, 26 October 2012 03:54 AM

Iran is developing a nuclear bomb and is also the main supporter for terrorist groups. Do not make these foolish statements and put the law abiding citizens of Sri Lanka to difficulty. What happen if US applies sanctions to Sri Lanka too for supporting Iran or calling a friendly state.

    dinesh Friday, 26 October 2012 04:00 AM

Why shall US compensate for in efficiencies of the Minister and his Government. This situation did not happen overnight and known for months. What was this petroleum minister doing until entire crude oil stock is consumed. Why did not buy from alternative sources at that time. Is it because no kickback.......

    Hassan Friday, 26 October 2012 04:01 AM

Iran is a terrorist Country. if they build a atom bomb, a threat peace in the whole world. We must stop Buying Iranian oil.we Must switch on to Saudis , Omanis ,Qua ties ,Russian etc.

    lapas Friday, 26 October 2012 04:58 AM

Ok, go ahead and stop, then we will have to close the refinery and be without oil

    Saman Friday, 26 October 2012 02:45 AM

I don't think US has money to pay SL. Majority of the Americans are struggling even to put food on the tables. Unemployment is at record levels so is the inflation. People are defaulting on their mortgages. US is not the super power it used to be.

    hello Friday, 26 October 2012 05:26 AM

What about other countries who have to buy oil? Iran is not the only source. You guys always make a bungle of the oil/diesel/petrol business in Sri Lanka and want to find a scapegoat, US, to cover up your lack of good management.

Big Ears Friday, 26 October 2012 05:19 AM

Yes, oil or not from Iran, we will soon be riding our great technology, the bullock.

buffaloa citizen Friday, 26 October 2012 05:51 AM

One honest answer from you....if your children were given a scholarship to choose...Iran, China and USA...what would you choose? Even MR and his family members life is connected to USA and not at all to Iran and China who for their present political and survival benefits they support and profess.

DMirror Fan Friday, 26 October 2012 05:51 AM

I think Iran also import our tea though they don't need it. Around 75% of our tea is bought by them. Now coffee culture is increasing even in Sri Lanka. So if US can by our tea it's ok then. Correct me if I'm wrong

    Chola Friday, 26 October 2012 05:55 AM

The Crude Oil refinery in S.L can only refine a selected type of Crude oil, Which mainly come from Iran.
And this is exactly what Chinese did when they build the coal electric generator in the East. The generator can only
Run on certain type of coal which China is the main exporter and they are expensive than the normal ones...No one gives money for Free.

    bandara Friday, 26 October 2012 06:26 AM

who will compensate the loss created by the present govt. by entering in to an illegal hedging deal

    vj Friday, 26 October 2012 12:00 AM

The government ishould have invested in upgrading the refinery before building new airports and Highways and ports, as there should be an uninterrupted supply of fuel for any of those to function.

Soon after the US elections Iran and Israel will go to war then will we still demand compensation? Time to start looking for alternate suppliers.
