The Cinnamon Grand Colombo Hotel Management on Monday said an internal investigation report into the food samples of the hotel served during the June 12 event at the Oak room at Cinnamon Grand Hotel where around 20 guests were hospitalised, revealed that the butter served at the function may have been the cause for concern.

Issuing a statement, the management said that, as reported, the hotel has extended its full co-operation to all investigations carried out by the regulatory authorities to ascertain the cause of the complaints.”

The statement also said:

“Immediately following the incident, the Cinnamon Grand sent samples of 67 items of food and drink for expert analysis by an independent and internationally accredited laboratory. A report received today revealed that the butter served at the function may have been the cause for concern. Immediate steps are being taken to further investigate this matter including testing at the level of the supplier and manufacturer.

This matter is of grave concern to us and is receiving our highest priority. Every attempt is being made to ascertain how this occurred and to ensure that an incident of this nature is avoided in the future.”

We have always adhered to the highest standards of food hygiene and environment including the ISO 14001, ISO 22000 and OHSAS 18001 and food hygiene receives our top priority as we serve over 5,500 meals a day at the Cinnamon Grand. This unfortunate incident has resulted in us reassessing all our processes and procedures once again to ensure that our standards remain the highest possible. There has been an immediate implementation of additional measures well above the required ISO standards in processes relating to purchasing, storing and food preparation so as to safeguard against a recurrence of this incident.

"In response to certain questions raised in the media regarding the quality of the air in the Oak Room, the Cinnamon Grand has also obtained external expert reports on the air quality systems in the function rooms which have been certified as compliant with applicable standards and ruled out as the cause of any concern.

The Cinnamon Grand deeply regrets the inconvenience suffered by organizers of this event and the guests who were taken ill at the function on 12th June 2015, ” the statement added.

Around 20 guests were hospitalised on June 12th night after they fell ill following a dinner party held in the Oak room at Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo organised by the Sri Lanka UK society to celebrate British Queen’s birthday.

The "Independent and Internationally accredited Laboratory" report suggests that the "Butter" used could be the cause of the food poisoning. Please publish the name of this "Laboratory" and also the name of the "Butter" the hotel uses.

Most hotels in Colombo are dirty. I have from my own eyes that if you go to the kitchen, you never eat any food from that hotel.

What is meant by "butter MAY have been the cause"? If the expert analysis by the independent and internationally accredited laboratory has said so that is the cause. What further analysis do you need ? Just reveal what has already been found..

This is the result of the breakdown of the Food Analysis programme conducted by the CMC. When Chief Medical Officer decided to do away with the programme due to a personal grudge against the deputy we all expected this to happen. May be the Mayor should order re-start of the programme?

As anyone can see hygiene is not top priority at any of our eating places or food sellers.

True! and just because JKH has a high market capitalisation rate they think they can capitalise the news through hogwash and flamboyant style. No offense to JKH. Just saying only...

Well, Cinnamon Grand first said that it not due to food poisoning and could be due to toxic gas leaking from the air conditioning system. This observation was made with the assistance of CMC heath officer. As this is major problem and will cause the hotel to close down and have the problem repaired at high cost now the butter story. Well money talks. If it is butter the hotel need to be closed for a lengthy period of time. This is done in Japan which is not as advanced as Sri Lanka.

"The Cinnamon Grand deeply regrets the inconvenience suffered by organizers of this event and the guests who were taken ill at the function on 12th June 2015, ” the statement added". People comment, some glorify others condemn - dogs bark, but the caravans move on. They would have sealed a smaller restaurant.

@Ruvin, Are you the General Manager of the The Cinnamon Grand trying to pass yourself off as a happy customer? :P

    Ruvin Tuesday, 23 June 2015 09:01 AM

I have to admit, I dine at Cinnamon Grand ever so often and I have never ever faced a situation like this. they are really very good with whatever they do. one of the most professionally run hotels i dare say. no matter what, this is the place to go and one small incident is not going to change the minds of people. Regular diners know what i am talking about.

    Sincere Tuesday, 23 June 2015 08:40 AM

OOh yes, we are getting ready for buttering season, and this will give a lesson to all that too much of buttering will cause havoc!

    SAM Tuesday, 23 June 2015 08:35 AM

This is not the first time this happened and certainly not the last, no issues, nothing will come out of it.

    Gune Tuesday, 23 June 2015 07:46 AM

This is a classic case of Sri Lankan companies not heeding to managing their PR. Food poisoning does happen in some of the grandest hotels and restaurants in the world. It is how information and corporate attitude to the issue that causes the most reactions. In this instance Cinnamon Grand with the backing of John Keells can hide behind the arrogant corporate attitude "we know it all" . In the 21st century Sri Lankan companies must learn to deal with these issues if they want to be true global players or else we should stay in our little island and do what we know best -criticise each other
