A number of animals, including mouse deer, deer and cranes, that were taken for exhibition at the model rural village ‘Ape Gama’ in Battaramulla during the time of the Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting (CHOGM) had died under tragic circumstances, Parliament was informed yesterday.

During the debate on the adjournment motion, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said five mouse deer taken to the village from the Dehiwala Zoo had died. He said 40 tortoises and some axis deer brought for the same purpose had also died.

“One deer had drowned in the nearby Diyawanna Lake. 12 cranes called Hendigalawa, whose wings had been clipped to prevent them from flying away, had also died. Today, the Zoo has become a virtual slaughterhouse, with animals being subjected to cruel treatment,” he said.

However, Zoological and Botanical Gardens Minister Jayaratne Herath said the JVP was involved in senseless violence at one time and, therefore, it was hilarious for him see Mr. Dissanayake talking about animal welfare.

“You tried to mislead the general public,” said Mr. Herath. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

People need to change and JVP has done that. But people who keep talking about JVP's past to cover up their mistakes are the real old JVP type..

People should understand the reality of these stupid ministers who have become a bunch of fools.

Animals should be freed and given freedom, likewise humans too should be independent, if not soon human beings in Sri Lanka will meet the same fate!

    Campos Friday, 09 May 2014 09:14 AM

And what is this about a bill to protect animals, pets in particular? One might say the animals in the zoo are the pets of the nation. And baby elephants being stolen from the wild? There is hypocrisy rampant in this country!

    KaluSudha Friday, 09 May 2014 09:28 AM

The comment by Minister Jayaratne Herath, just shows what sort of stupid morons are there in parliment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a stupid minister who has no guts to even answer reasonable queries with regard to subject matters under him. This CHOGM has been just a grand show piece to boost the ego of just one man, with nothing to show for at the end of the day.

    Chandana Friday, 09 May 2014 05:01 AM

This is pathetic, even managing this even at stake, than governing.

    Prometheus Friday, 09 May 2014 04:22 AM

what JVP did in the past is not an excuse to clip wings of those poor cranes. Be it war or animals, this country has some twisted thinking.

    Hafsal Friday, 09 May 2014 04:32 AM

So this means the government can do anything since JVP and UNP did bad things during their era. What a irresponsible comment by the responsible minister.

    Loki Friday, 09 May 2014 04:35 AM

my god what is wrong with this government? sick!

A typical moday's comment by the Minister!!

    hb Friday, 09 May 2014 04:51 AM

Since JVP had done wrong at one time, they should not point out current wrong doings of the givernment. Great logic by the minister. We are correctly heading in the right direction of being the wonder of asia.

    Dilan Friday, 09 May 2014 04:53 AM

Why is this become a joke. When its not. How come no one cares.

    Hefi Friday, 09 May 2014 05:11 AM

Two wrongs doesnt make a right, Minister Jayaratne Herath! Man up and answer if the allegation is true rather that try to pull up the past.

    Mason Friday, 09 May 2014 05:11 AM

The government gets away with misdeeds evading truthful answers to questions raised. The animals and birds that have died are national property and not personal to the minister to be destroyed at his whims and fancies.

    Chandana Friday, 09 May 2014 05:12 AM

Past is past and the present context to be answered, the Minister to evade comes up different stories, Why JVP cannot raise a question on animals. People remembers 71 but no point here in bringing disgraced to scenario.

    Perumal Friday, 09 May 2014 05:23 AM
Poor animals.
CHOGM also would die under tragic circumstances within the next two years.

sacre blieu Friday, 09 May 2014 05:33 AM

If a politician puts his finger on anything good, you could be sure he at the end destroy it.The public will, ultimately, have to pay the price.

    OMG Friday, 09 May 2014 05:41 AM

Similarly Karuna Amman, Palliyan and KP have killed so many people in the recent past.
