SLPP Leader and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that they will make arrangements to get a two thirds majority created in parliament if the party did not receive it at the General Election.

Speaking to journalists at the Medamulana D.A. Rajapaksa Maha Vidyalaya in Weeraketiya where he cast his vote, the Prime Minister however said he was positive of the party winning two thirds majority.

“There is a need for a parliament with a two thirds majority. We are ready to face the economic challenges. We have already faced challenges more severe than these. We commend the people's enthusiasm to vote in line with health guidelines," he said.

He said that the President's programme which was approved by 6.9 million people, would be continued to be implemented following the General Election.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa, Shiranthi Rajapaksa, SLPP candidates Chamal Rajapaksa and Namal Rajapaksa and their family members arrived at the polling centre to cast their votes. (Aneesha Manage)

That means you can't get majority Sinhalese vote then...so it's a SLPP failure

    Samson Wednesday, 05 August 2020 06:41 PM

2/3 is not necessary to run the country. Such is necessary mainly to remove the 19A or bring in a new constitution. Such action should be taken by all parties in parliament and not only the governing party.

    Gamage Wednesday, 05 August 2020 06:43 PM

The following parliament (2025) will also do same.

For him, it appears "will of the people" is not supreme. What a sad statement. It is known either "hook or crook" policy

    Joshua Wednesday, 05 August 2020 06:56 PM

Yeah, Rajapakshes are good at horse trading but it will not happen. He will loose the SLFP members too. What arrogance

    ACA Wednesday, 05 August 2020 07:04 PM

You will go beyond the people’s mandate in that scenario. You will ignore people to achieve your own selfish agenda. Buying MP with useless portfolio was your past practice.

May the Triple Gems Bless MR and GR Government!

    varuna Wednesday, 05 August 2020 07:29 PM

Sorry, I do not think the noble triple gems would bless a family in the calibre of Rajapakses. Can't you just read and understand the simple message or the gist of MR's statement? Such naivety on the part of Sri Lankans gives the Rajapakses the road to fascism.

True Citizen Wednesday, 05 August 2020 07:35 PM

2/3 is required only to manipulate the constitution. It is not required if you genuinely committ to serve the country.

    misfortunr Wednesday, 05 August 2020 07:39 PM

We know it will be possible for you with the grace of some minority parties entering the trading exchange market. After that we will see the same old game .

The previous government offered an opposition leader post to Mr.Sampanthan in exchange for his support. In a way, it was a bribe to Mr.Sampanthan

    Liars Wednesday, 05 August 2020 07:41 PM

Blatantly saying about buying mps. People's mandate should be respected.

    Nimal Wednesday, 05 August 2020 07:50 PM

No 2/3 majority for sure. Now throwing money for heads is next game. That is what he says. "Me paththea enawaadha"?

    Mahesh Wednesday, 05 August 2020 07:59 PM

It shows he is ready to continue dirty politics like before.. Heh has not changed much..

Ramesh Kanth Wednesday, 05 August 2020 08:36 PM

It is good to see you admit you will go to any extend to bend any one to make them to fall in your line. We have seen this before 2015 and during MS 'S government. After all these you call yourself a decent parliamentarian don't you? Hope a beginning of a new arrogant government not in the horizon.

    roni Wednesday, 05 August 2020 08:38 PM

Which means horse trading has already begun. Disgraceful as that may not be will of the people. No wonder so many want to do politics instead of proper higher education.

    Moses Wednesday, 05 August 2020 08:39 PM

Two-third to destroy the 19th amendment, nothing else!!! Can't imagine anything else!!!

    VJ Wednesday, 05 August 2020 09:48 PM

Give him all 225, let him sell the country to China rather than selling in pieces. He was the only leader who sold a piece of this land to another country.

    MAY GOD BLESS YOU SIR.

    Kalu Thursday, 06 August 2020 06:58 AM

The losers are already feeling the heat. What is the will of the people? The people want a strong government to defeat whatever artificial tampering that was made previously to the constitution which were made as per the whims and fancies of vested interests in 2015. Why was a national government under the yahapaluwas was acceptable then and not now? This is allowed as per the constitution. Would any elected members want to bring changes to stop cross overs? Absolutely no. They all want to keep this window of opportunity open. This is after all a country in the sub continent! They all want a return on their election spending and your vote don't mean a thing in reality. Deals crossovers strengthening the hands are all part of the game and it was done by the previous regimes from both camps and is expected now too.

    Till 2030

Panth Rajes Kumaran Thursday, 06 August 2020 11:30 AM

What we need is a corrupt free government with good vision to take our country forward. To do that we don,t need 2/3rd majority. Learn the lesson from past mistakes. The voters cast their votes in good faith. So don,t let them down. Do not buy MPs for money to achieve you own agenda.

NV Jen Thursday, 06 August 2020 03:50 PM

Confidence about buying few (Monkey )MP's with his money power, is the reason for this audacious statement.
