Vandalising Buddha Statues: Suspects remanded till February 27

The suspects in remand custody in connection with vandalizing statues of the Buddha in several areas in the country were produced before Mawanella Magistrate Upul Rajakaruna and further remanded till February 27.

One of the suspects is a woman.

The eleven suspects on remand were produced in court by prison officers and four others by the CID.

Another two suspects arrested for providing accommodation to the main suspects were produced in court and all of them were remanded.

It was of significance that any lawyer of the Mawanella Court did not appear for the suspects.

The first incident of vandalising Buddha statues was reported from Mawanella on December 24 and 25.

One of the suspects, who was damaging a Buddha statue in Kadugannawa area was caught and handed over the Police by residents of the area.

The Police said that he provided information on others involved.

However the main suspect wanted in connection with the incident was yet to be arrested, the Police said.(Samana Wijeya Bandara)

    nip in the bud! wahaabi movement is very active now. ignore them and the state will face the same debacle they faced with tigers. a high profile minister has the blessing of this govt. who is a wahaabi, is behind this. all women who dress the hijabi are proponents of this movement. the shops selling this dress must be warned not to sell them. the east is under wahaabi control already.

    This incident followed by two other incident purposefully done by organized gang who piled up mass destruction weapons in various part of the country with help of some other countries who support local groups who have contact to Al quda, ISIS ict, Government and law enforcement departments should take serious action on these incidents which will otherwise serious erosion of peace would be in society.
