Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas has resigned from his post as Consultant bowling coach and will not be a part of the support staff for Sri Lanka's tour of West Indies.

Vaas’ resignation comes hours before the Sri Lankan team travels to the West Indies later tonight.

Even though his resignation is effective March 26, Vaas had informed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) he would not be available for the tour of West Indies.

He had, according to a SLC media statement, made an “unjustifiable demand” for an increased remuneration ahead of the tour and had resigned after SLC had not acceded to his request.

Vaas responded to the SLC statement by tweeting: "I made a humble request to SLC and they turned it down. That’s all I can say at the moment. Justice will prevail!."

In its statement, SLC also hit out at Vaas calling his move “irresponsible”.

“It is particularly disheartening to note that in an economic climate such as the one facing the entire globe right now, Mr. Vaas has made this sudden and irresponsible move on the eve of the team’s departure, based on personal monetary gain,” the statement read.

“The Management of SLC, and indeed the entire nation, hold Mr. Vaas in high esteem as a cricketer who has excelled for his country. His years of yeoman service have been appreciated and rewarded over the years both in status and in kind.”

“In such circumstances, it is extremely disheartening that a legend such as Chaminda Vaas has resorted to holding the administration, the cricketers, and indeed the game at ransom, by handing in his resignation at the eleventh hour, citing the administration’s refusal to accede to an unjustifiable demand for an increased USD remuneration, in spite of being a contracted employee of Sri Lanka Cricket, already receiving remuneration that is in keeping with his experience, qualifications, and expertise, in addition to which he would have been entitled to the usual USD per diems offered to all members of a traveling squad,” the statement also said.

Vaas was appointed as Fast Bowling Coach for the West Indies tour last week, after Australian David Saker resigned from the post.

WHY THIS AFTER THREE DAYS?? Some thing wrong some where?? Sport minister why so many days silence!!!

    Lanka Monday, 22 February 2021 07:24 PM

Money talks!! Seriously just don’t go ahead with his tour. It will be massive disgrace

    Ranaweera Monday, 22 February 2021 07:41 PM

He was probably asked to be born again before they could approve his appointment. Vass refused. A man of principle.

BE FAIR Monday, 22 February 2021 08:32 PM

The SLC Administrators squander big time. I see no reason why Vaas cant ask for a slice of that pie, especially for his expertise. Sure Principle took precedence over "personal monetary gain"

    Jehan Monday, 22 February 2021 08:41 PM

Cricket board is bunch of crooks, they wanted the team to play badly, match fixed, like West Indies vs Bangladesh. Indian bookies

Michael Ranasinghe Monday, 22 February 2021 09:14 PM

Please refer my comment last week I said Vaas has had a very good record coaching overseas but won't last long with SLC. I was proved correct sooner than I expected . Knowing Vaas he would have made a reasonable request and SLC a corrupt den has the audacity to talk of difficult economic circumstances . We saw how SLC was exposed in front of COPE.

    Ranaweera Monday, 22 February 2021 11:23 PM

Michael is absolutely correct. Vass is someone who has done a great service. I do not believe the SLC story at all. SLC officials are crooks. I also watched how they played the delay game with COPE.

    A nizam Monday, 22 February 2021 11:26 PM

I’m a huge critic of SLC but I think in this instances it was a matter of greed by vaas. Can’t blame him for wanting more money but please don’t make that out to be patriotic and blame the SLC.

    nick Monday, 22 February 2021 11:55 PM

Vass lost his credibility. It is such a bad impression on him to pull out of the tour knowing the team will be without a bowling coach

    Jude Tuesday, 23 February 2021 12:42 AM

In any contact there's always opt-out clause, yeah either party can terminate a contract!! I've come across number of occasions SLC arbitrarily terminate contracts!! Vass have earned the right to demand more money for his services! Period!!

    Anthony Tuesday, 23 February 2021 01:03 AM

Michael is spot on, absolutely correct, SLC is Not a place for Gentalmen, they are Crooks, it's corrupt. The Cope has also exposed them, and how they dodge with lame excuses.

    Ram Tuesday, 23 February 2021 01:30 AM

Cricket Board would have kept the request/discussion on the salary increase until the last minute to expose Vaas as the bad person

Haig Urum Tuesday, 23 February 2021 08:33 AM

The agreement was not established in time, but for SLC to come out and wash dirty linen in public shows why their is not problem resolution in the country. Cricket in bad hands. The decline will continue.

    Man Tuesday, 23 February 2021 11:26 AM

Vaas must receive as Saker received as his replacement until his service is required to be ceased. Vaas is correct.

De Silva Tuesday, 23 February 2021 12:59 PM

SLC hires foreign coaches who have only played first class or county cricket and pay them extremely high salaries (and other perks) in USD. So why shouldn't Vaas being a cricketer with over 750 international wickets, be paid the same amount as David Saker was paid? Grant Flower, our batting coach has an international average of 29.5 in tests. I'm sure he must be paid 5 times the salary Vaas is paid. How is that fair? They will pay an exorbitant amount to any foreign joker who has paid a few first class matches. Forget cricket, if an employee worked in a company as an executive and is suddenly promoted as a Manager and is expected to do the Manager's job (and deliver results) for the executive's pay, is that correct? In my opinion Vaas had every right to resign. This derogatory statement issued by SLC shows what pathetic standards it stoops to and how differently they treat Sri Lankans compared to foreigners. No wonder, former national cricketers don't want to get involved!
