UNP to revamp the party

United National Party (UNP) seniors said they would meet on Monday to discuss the reorganizing and restructuring of the party.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said in a statement it was being done with the intention of making it a vibrant entity.

“We request the people to take both victory and defeat in good spirits and maintain peace. UNP will be restructured and reorganized as it was done after every previous election,” he said.  “We take the responsibility for the huge defeat suffered by the UNP in the face of internal and external challenges.”

Mr. Kariyawasam said the SLPP had secured a land-slide victory despite the services rendered by the UNP government on a long term and short term basis. (Yohan Perera)

Before you do anything , Please change the UNP leader RW..................

    vince Friday, 07 August 2020 03:38 PM

Get real man. The UNP needs a real leader with bottle and balls, not a whinging loser. So elect a worthy leader and there may be hope for the UNP or it will end up like the JVP with no mandate from the people and no seats in Parliament. 1 seat in Parliament, how pathetic is that?

    Outsider Friday, 07 August 2020 03:39 PM

Doesn't the leader bear any responsibility for this humiliating defeat?

Warren Raed Friday, 07 August 2020 03:41 PM

It's time you all leave the party. No need to toil so hard in revamping the party. Just go. Automatically, everything will fall into its place. The message is clear. Just leave everything and go home. Plant some trees and do some charity for the sake of the future generations.

Only way forward for you UNP is to handover the leadership to Sajith

    roobarbie Friday, 07 August 2020 04:37 PM

Vibrant entity? My foot! Get rid of the dead wood struggling to grow new leaves, and the corrupt individuals from you lot first.

Please have a meeting with SJB and make Sajith Premadasa as UNP party leader. That's enough to get votes in the future election. Otherwise it will be the same position like SLFP in the future. RW must resign and go. He should take full responsibility for this defeat.

Go and fly a kite in your back yard

    Redflame Friday, 07 August 2020 04:54 PM

Absolutely the so called UNP was routed by peoples mandate and flushed into the toilet pit. There is no UNP without Sajith. Dont daydream and live in a wonderland as your leader did. Try to identify the pulse of the grassroot UNPers and face the reality.

    rew Friday, 07 August 2020 05:09 PM

All those who contested as UNP ers should get out of the way, and let genuine UNP ers take over. No hope otherwise

Voter Silva Friday, 07 August 2020 05:11 PM

"We request the people..." what people? Not even your own families appear to have voted for you. No point repeating the same old slogan that you will reorganise. Just accept the people's verdict and resign!

    alex Friday, 07 August 2020 05:38 PM

    is it required any more

    raj Friday, 07 August 2020 05:39 PM

great statement but there is nothing left over to reorganize at present. If UNP wants to have a good feature, it should bring a charismatic leader.

Gayan Samarasekara Friday, 07 August 2020 05:41 PM

Ruwan Wijeywardena is the best option. Remove Sajith P. The frustrated opponents of MR don’t have a good educated credible option without making Ruwan W the leader. Others in the UNP are not publicly marketable, though there are several good names.

Frustrated UNPer Friday, 07 August 2020 07:00 PM

Ranil with his notorious Deputy and Gen. Secretary must quit without any further talking if the Party is to relive.

Anthony Perera Saturday, 08 August 2020 10:26 PM

If Ranil has an iota of decency and integrity he would resign immediately like many international leaders who lose do.

    DA Saturday, 08 August 2020 10:59 PM

Restructured after every election to demolish the party even more. Now UNP is reduced to more rubble - not even grass roots will grow in the infertile rubble of bankrupt politicos that is left behind. If UNP hopes to have even a fighting chance in 2025, a complete overhaul of the entire party is what is needed now, allowing it to grow from the grassroots... to win back its next generation of constituents to deliver the common national agenda more efficiently than previous governments.
