The Russian made Sputnik-V vaccine would be used as the main vaccine against COVID-19 in Sri Lanka within this year, State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana said today.

He told reporters that they had the potential to provide the Sputnik vaccine for 6,500,000 citizens.

Sri Lanka today started administering the first dose of Sputnik V vaccine.

The State Minister said the second dose of the Sputnik-V vaccine would be only after three weeks from the first dose.

A consignment of 15,000 Sputnik-V vaccine vials were brought to the country on May 04.

Those who are between the age group of 30 to 60 years from Gothatuwa, in the Colombo district will receive the Sputnik-V vaccine.

Meanwhile, State Minister Jayasumana said they had no intention or plans to administer Sputnik-V as the second dose to those who were vaccinated with AstraZeneca vaccine.

He also said the Government had no issue with the funds to purchase more vaccines from Russia and added they have already allocated the required funds.

“We have already signed an agreement for the purchase of the vaccines and the payment are being made for them,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

The minister is doing a good job. Even Germans are going to Russia to get the sputnik vaccine. Watch the deutche welle (DW) program. Try to get a vaccine plant operational in Sri Lanka. In parallel, get our medical students and bio students in to that field. If we start now in 10 years we will not be helpless. Consider this, Cuba has 5 vaccines candidates in process of valudation. Two of them are in phase 3 trials. Cuba's s medical industry is top notch due to withering sanctions from uncle Sam. They had to fend for themselves and doing an outstanding job. Think of the BT bacteria for dengue and you know how environmentally friendly their solutions are. May be send students for training to Cuba. I like your analytical, methodical approach. Thank you again minister. I live in a western country, first world where this is a bigger mess than Sri Lanka. Do your best ignore the traitors who think their political party is their motherland. They are missing few nuts and bolts in the head!!!

Minister is doing a great job. Look at how he is running around-the-clock and calling every country to find out if he could get 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca after Indian abandoned us. Sputnik and Sinopharm are good vaccines used by many countries. Some ignorant retired English speaking (they think they know good English) people are always denouncing anything non-unp government does. Best is to ignore those old idiots. Who cares about what they say.

The Russian vaccine is a good performer. The Chinese vaccine has only 50% efficacy and does not work. Brazilians proved it and now the Chileans learnt the lesson. In Chile it was the Chinese vaccine used - in fact for 93% of the population. Corona is raising it's head in Chile again. Only Generation 2 vaccines can provide immunity against all the variants. But these are still in the final stages of development.
