The Cabinet has given the green light to the Sri Lanka Air Force to purchase four helicopters to train helicopter pilots for peace keeping duties overseas, Cabinet Spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said today.

Minister Pathirana told the weekly Cabinet news briefing that SLAF personnel were serving in Sudan and Central Africa now and a contingent of helicopter pilots were urgently needed for their UN sponsored peace keeping mission.

“The two helicopters in use to train pilots were purchased in 1981 and give a lot of problems,” he said.
“Training with them is risky and therefore, purchasing a few modern helicopters is extremely vital,” Minister Pathirana said.

Price is mentioned nowhere. Taste of the MIG purchase don't go away that fast. Is it the need of the hour? Healthcare, education, quality life given no preference at all.

Instead of spending billions of dollars, Why not train them overseas with India Pakistan or China based on our relationship Or train them on simulator like all major airlines do

Country is broke but we can afford not one but four helicopters. These are in all probability to transport politicians.

    K.L Pathirana Friday, 10 July 2020 09:39 AM

Is this what we need right now ? If the UN wants us to contribute to their peace keeping missions, they should train our pilots. After all no matter how and what we train our pilots on, they still need helicopter specific training to fly a UN mission on their helicopters. Part II of MiG deal in on its way and Udayanga is the deal maker, your tax money is at work !!

If there are 4 choppers to purchase, How many pilots are you seeing at to train them if at present we have been training with the existing 2?
