Sri Lanka is experiencing its highest temperature levels in 140 years, Professor Chandana Jayaratne from the Department of Physics, Colombo University said today.

Professor Jayaratne said this could be confirmed by examining climate data statistics. He said the temperature levels have gone up by 2 to 3 degrees from what it was 30 years ago, which according to him could be due to global warming.

A spokesman from the Department of Meteorology however said it cannot be responsible for the statement made by Professor Jayaratne.

However as per the data put out by the Department of Meteorology the temperature levels have slightly reduced. The temperature in Vavuniya, which went upto almost 38c degrees on Thursday (11) was down to 37.5c degrees, The temperature in Kurunegala had come down to 35.1c degrees.

The temperatures in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, where the temperature was more than 37c degrees on Thursday, had also reduced according to the Department of Meteorology. Comparatively the temperature in Anuradhapura was 36.7c degrees while the temperature in Polonnaruwa was 36.5c degrees last afternoon.

However, the department did issue a heat advisory which said staying in the sun for long hours could result in heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

At the same time it issued an advisory on severe thunderstorms which was for the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva Provinces. (Yohan Perera)

This is a meaningless news story. If the Professor said that the present temperature is the highest in 140 years, it has no meaning unless there is indication of what the temperature was 140 years ago (year 1879). Do you have the temperature records for 1879. and, if so what was it? Was it one degree less than the present. If that is so, then there was global warming in 1879 too and, later there has been "global cooling" after 1879. Then the news story says present temperature is 2-3 degrees Celsius higher than what it was 30 years ago. So, please tell us which one do you compare the present temperature with, 30 years or 140 years ago. Do not publish senseless stories, jumping on the bandwagon of "global warming" without scientific evidence to substantiate them.

The Meteorology Department and Prof Jayaratne should look at the Data compiled by the Canadians and published in 1958 titled "Hydro meteorology of Sri Lanka" which records rainfall and temperatures month by month and spans a period of 50 years backwards. this Project was under Sri Lanka Colombo Plan cooperation.I am certain that a copy will be available at the Met Department. When I joined the Geological Survey Department (Present GSMB ) in 1965 i always referred to this Publication in my research work.I hope the GSMB may be having a copy.

omg what kind of stupidity is this, once again by the Met Dept. The Prof is saying that the overall temp has increased and you don't have to be a genius to realize that! And the Met Dept is saying the temp has gone down the last few days. Seriously, do these guys even understand what the Prof is talking about? Hilarious.

Global warming mumbo jumbo is a hoax. Global warming boogey is a money making enterprise spearheaded by the dems in USA.

MSD, I think you need to look at the scientific data published by NASA before you make anymore idiotic statements in a public domain. Global warming is a real thing. No need to look any further, look at the rainfall, ambient temperatures, relative humidity and wind speeds/direction within sri lanka.

ala when you get the temperature statistics 140 years ago please let me also know.

Met department came into existence in 1850 and so it has records for over 140 years. What is laughable is that the Met dept is talking about temperature difference within two days at Vauvniya! This is the effect of global warming. Last year is the warmest year ever recorded globally
