President Maithripala Sirisena has asked Foreign Affairs Minister and former finance minister Ravi Karunanayake to resign from his portfolio in the face of the allegations levelled against him in connection with the Central Bank bond sale, government sources said yesterday.

They said the President had told the minister that if he continued to function as a Cabinet minister, it would create serious issues not only to the government but also to the minister himself and as such the President had pointed out that the best solution available to the minister is to resign from his ministerial portfolio.

President Sirisena is reported to have conveyed this to the minister during a dinner held on Thursday night at Temple Trees to celebrate Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's completion of 40 years as a Member of Parliament.

Minister Karunanayake was also summoned to the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) to testify with regard to the evidence submitted to it. (Ajantha Kumara Agalakada)

Id he doesn't resign sack him. Simple.

    Nic Saturday, 05 August 2017 08:34 AM

Mr President: If you feel so strongly that Ravi should resign - which any decent honorable human being in the position that Ravi is in would have done so, without being asked to do so - why not sack him. All members of the cabinet serve at your pleasure? Further his lack of regard to truth and turning the tables on the attorneys within the AG's Department as being on a witch hunt to tarnish his "image" speaks volumes as to how low this person can descend to . Get rid of him Mr President for the sake of your good governance government theme and your political future. Next should be the PM and a few of his cronies in Cabinet.

    Premalal Saturday, 05 August 2017 12:33 PM

The PM is a man without shame, protecting the corrupt of his government and the previous. The sooner this country gets rid of him the better it would be.I hope that the President will act like a President even during the second half of his term because if he goes like this, the Jackals will be back.

We need to look at how to stop corruption in the government …….. NOT by electing any local politicians…………. the entire SLK government requires be leased to a technically advanced developed foreign nation. Then not only you and I but also our children and grand children can benefit

Sri Lanka Saturday, 05 August 2017 08:45 AM

If he needs to resign, why not sack him?

    Premalal Saturday, 05 August 2017 12:37 PM

A normal person would have been sacked from his job and may be got a prison sentence for Rs.1,000. Justice and equality must be brought back to this country. We just cannot wait any longer.

    Lionel Saturday, 05 August 2017 08:47 AM

President should also ask the Election Commissioner to resign for postponing elections indefinitely.

Well done President we want you to follow the 15 files of corruption sent to AG's Department against the former regime ministers. These files are hidden kindly follow up

    President Saturday, 05 August 2017 12:12 PM

Johan putha, even after 2 1/2 years of investigations we have not found an iota of evidence to prove any of those allegations that we directed at MR and the clan before Jan 8. Do you honestly believe that with all my hatred burning inside me, I will allow MR to stay free if I have little bit of something to put him behind bars. Anyway I thank you for believing in those canards and being one of the 62 Million.

    Aquarius Saturday, 05 August 2017 09:05 AM

We all know our leaders are without backbones and using questionable tongues. Looks good on paper, but this request to resign is another political statement to clear himself and keep his party happy. Remember the same person said a load of things during the election campaign and promised he will deal with them ruthlessly when in power and he is now THE power but all those corruption claims and people behind those are free and continue to destroy our country.

    Gayan Saturday, 05 August 2017 09:12 AM

Was it a request made casually? Why not the Prez summon the guy to his office and make it more official. If not this request will also be like "Kana bona welawata kiyana dewal wediya ganganna epa"

    SOLUTION ? Saturday, 05 August 2017 09:42 AM

" best solution available to the minister is to resign from his ministerial portfolio." solution ? THe only "solution" I can think of is -- we may miss an entertaining parliamentary debate given by all the rogues. The solution to the bond scam is getting the money back and punishment of the perpetrators, :

    Hautaum Saturday, 05 August 2017 09:45 AM

I totally agree with the President. It will be a good example to other ministers as well. Ravi cannot go doing his job until he clears his name in full. Hope Ravi resign today. We want honest politicians and crooks in our parliament.

    sadery Saturday, 05 August 2017 12:44 PM

shouldn't the president resign for letting it happen under his nose, along with the pm and his cabinet? this is not a joke, it happened under their watch. it's undeniable proof of incompetence. we are the bosses right? why ask them?

    rew Saturday, 05 August 2017 01:03 PM

Yes, Who will resign for the FAKE promises before the Pres election such as:-Massive corruption of leading family in previous regime, several high profile murders, money laundering, Welikada Jail murders, Rathupaswela, Chilaw, Uma Oya, Port City, Hambantota Port and Air Port, etc etc.

    DillonDP Saturday, 05 August 2017 01:26 PM

What nonsense is this,,,, he should also be arrested for his crime, if i steal 100 thousand from someone i have to spend years in jail, this guy only gets to resign and go home with all the illegally earned millions?

Mad Dog Saturday, 05 August 2017 01:38 PM

All the evidence clearly shows that Ravi did commit a crime. In the best interest of our beautiful nation Ravi should at once resign from his post. I don't think Ravi can prove he is innocent. This will be a good example to others. This doesn't mean others in politics are honest. There are hundreds of present past corrupted are still holding top jobs. President should take immediate action against all .

Stunned Citizen Saturday, 05 August 2017 07:11 PM

Enough is enough, of all this drama, first we were blind folded and plundered, cos everyone had their fingers in the pie. Even after 2 1/2 years they are still roaming licking their fingers. Now we are being robbed openly and Justice is still blind. Time for us Citizens to send these rogues packing. Line them up on gallery face green and hang them to set an example and any future hopes of hoodwinking us the people.

    darkhorse Saturday, 05 August 2017 07:28 PM

If he was honorable enough, RK should have resigned long time ago without waiting to be asked by his Boss!

    Ben Saturday, 05 August 2017 07:58 PM

Sir , You are correct we will standby you,PM should have done this sacking, Not you He should have sacked this guy..Surely PM knows what the earlier PM of Singapore did to his finance minister within a short time forming the first government in Singapore Such a large sum of money in the family, this guy have no idea, Stop operations of this company too and investigate I am sure there is a container inside a warehouse with the several lockers.

David Edirisinghe Saturday, 05 August 2017 10:15 PM

Time and again SL politicians are involved in bribery and corruption no matter which party they represent. When one party comes into power they start the rot and then when the other one is elected to clean up the mess, they too play out!! So sadly there's no hope for honesty and transparency in SL because 99.9% of politicians are so corrupt. The only difference one sees is that in the case of the present government, people are freely condemning and speaking out against these illegal activities. However in the case of the last government, no one would dare to open their mouth! If they did, next day they would be missing!! So its fair to say that currently democracy and freedom of speech is being practiced in SL and that's a good thing!!!

    Mike Tuesday, 08 August 2017 12:21 PM

Mr.President what is there to ask him to resign, your very request says that he has stolen, sack him, we elected you for clean politics and governance not to drag your feet Mr.President, come on we are getting impatient
